Comparatively Mellow

Winnie blushed heavily and shooed me away. "Stop it," she huffed. "Don't think that just because we've...done some things...that we're like, a couple or something." I ruffled her hair, making her half heartedly swat my hands away.

Shrugging, I sat down to eat. "Okay...so what ARE we?" I countered, rather curious. Winnie's eyes went wide and she coughed up the sausage that had been halfway down her throat (she had...a certain way of eating sausage). "I...uh..." she stammered before taking a long chug of juice. "I guess we're...uh...really good friends?" The nervous smile she offered seemed to hide a bit of disappointment at that term. Not even she liked the concept.

One thing at a time, I figured. "If you say so, Winnie. However you want to do this," I told her. Her brow furrowed slightly and she crammed food into her mouth, giving me a dirty look. At first I didn't understand why, then it occurred to me that she probably wanted me to protest. Insist we were closer than friends. There was no pleasing her, really...but that's what I paid for.

Finishing breakfast, we decided it was time to get Winnie some things. Clothes, shoes...there was a lot my place was lacking. The entire time, Winnie was giving me the silent treatment. "Okay," I said as we parked at the mall, "what kind of clothes do you...?" Winnie exited the car before I could finish. Wow, she was pissed.

"Let's look around," Winnie finally said to me. "If I see something I like, I'll get it...uh...if you can afford it, I guess..." She looked downcast, her anger apparently forgotten for the time being. "I'm sorry you need to spend this on me..." I brushed it off, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Don't mention it. Besides, a lovely lady like yourself should have something better than yoga pants to wear. I think she told me to shut up, but she was mumbling.
