Chapter 39

How to spend the remainder of lunch?
Common dining hall.
Feeling a bit hungry, you decide it best to actually eat something during your lunch period. Perhaps if you eat in the main dining hall, instead of the one in house Phoenix, you could avoid Harmony and give her some time as Ophelia suggested.
You make your way back down the hall towards the common dining hall shared by all the houses. It is surely filled with mostly first year students who had yet to be sorted into a house but some other students are surely to be there as well. The common dining hall is located in the main building centered on campus. It's doors are large grand wooden structures intricately carved with symbols of the school and the four student houses. Inside the space is enormous with a balcony wrapping across three of it's walls and a raised seating area along the fourth. In all, enough room to seat every student and professor at the academy. Great glass spheres hang from the ceiling that glow with colorful light illuminate the room. Doorways leading to two separate kitchens to the left and right of the main entrance. As you had imagined many of its current occupants are first year students all abuzz discussing their classes, what they hoped to learn, or what house they wished to be sorted into next year. You noticed some were even practicing rudimentary spells at their tables.
You enter one of the kitchens and claim a plate of smoked fish and vegetables befor finding a seat alone. You don't really feel like socializing and simply want to get Harmony off your mind for the time being. Your evocation class is next and you decide to feel out the energy in the room. Perhaps focusing on your studies will help take your mind off things. Professor Kiehn's words guiding you, you close your eyes and focus on the astral forces around you. With so much going on around you, the dining hall is a flood of various sensations. Almost pressing into your mind with such **** you could feel it on your skin. Trying to concentrate on one **** at a time, you clear your mind. The glowing from the glass orbs hanging from the ceiling, heat from the kitchens, white pulses from the other students, an almost cold firmness from the stone walls. You decide it best to focus on the slight warmth radiating from the smoked fish before you. The heat within, it's energy faint, you rach out with your astral self. You can feel it in your hands without physically touching it. Trying to coax it into something greater, a strange sensation fills your body and the energy before you begins to grow and expand. A moment later the fish on your plate catches fire causing you to jump! You quickly grab your glass and douse the flames before they spread to the table. Looking around to see if anyone noticed but they all appear to be engrossed in their own activities.
"Not bad." You hear a voice from behind you. Turning to look you see a boy wearing a wyvern pendant affixed to his sweater. "Names Liam. Practicing evocation I see." He states as he takes a seat next to you and offers his hand.
"Um.. well, yeah I suppose." You answer nervously as you shake his hand. "It's my class next period so I thought I would try to get ahead."
"No worries mate. A little fire is far from the worst thing conjured in these halls" Liam laughs. "Starting a fire from a smoked fish though. You must have an affinity for fire or just be a natural at evocation. Have you ever considered wizard dueling? We are looking to put together this years dueling team. You should join up." He hand you a flyer displaying the details of tryouts. "Tryouts are in Delmorgan park tomorrow after class is out. We could use someone with your talent." He notices your House Phoenix pendant. "Some of the best duelists come from your house."
"I hadn't really considered it before. I'm still new to the school and don't know many spells yet." You admit to Liam.
"That's ok. Even students who don't make the actual team are welcome to practice with us. It's a great way to learn new spells and make new friends. I hope to see you there." He says before shaking your hand again and standing to take his leave.
