Coffee Talk
Saturday afternoon washed over the penthouse in deceptively warm autumn light, yet a suffocating silence hung throughout the sprawling rooms. My father had left for a weekend conference in Frankfurt, and his wife was out for the day catching up with friends. The apartment belonged entirely to Loona—and, by extension, to me as the only remaining piece of inventory at her disposal.
Around five o'clock, the intercom buzzer droned. My stomach clenched on pure reflex.
When the double doors slid open, Emma was standing in the hall. She wore tight dark denim, white sneakers, and a cropped beige puffer jacket, her cheeks flushed with color from the crisp air outside. She radiated that effortless, self-assured ease that instantly claimed whatever room she entered.
"Hey Loona!" she called out cheerfully, sliding out of her shoes and stepping inside without the slightest hesitation, as if walking into her own family home.
Loona emerged from the living room dressed in a cream cashmere sweater and black trousers, arms folded over her chest. A thin, satisfied smile touched her features. "Punctual. Good boy. Come on in."
Emma threw me a fleeting glance as she brushed past, taking in my gray sweatpants and downcast eyes with a barely perceptible twitch at the corner of her lips. "Well, John. Did you survive German class?"
All I managed to choke out was a gravelly, "Hi."
In the living room, the two made themselves comfortable on the wide sectional. Emma tucked her legs up, unclipped her iPad, and arranged several printouts across the glass table while Loona leaned back against a throw pillow. It looked like an ordinary, relaxed afternoon of two friends studying together—yet the hierarchy had long been etched in stone.
"John," Loona’s voice drifted over, quiet and completely without strain. "Iced tea for Emma. Lemon, fresh mint, plenty of ice. And bring me an espresso. Quick."
"On it," I muttered, spinning on my heel toward the kitchen. The resin shell chafed against the sensitized skin in my groin with every pivot. My hands trembled slightly as I dropped ice cubes into the crystal tumbler and started the espresso machine.
When I stepped back into the living area balancing the heavy tray, their conversation paused. I placed the glass before Emma, set the espresso beside Loona, and was just about to retreat toward the hallway.
"Wait," Emma murmured softly. She took a sip through the glass straw, briefly closing her eyes in appreciation before looking over at Loona. "Delicious. But he's standing around looking a bit out of place, don't you think?"
Loona let out a quiet chuckle—a dry, amused sound that raised the fine hairs on the back of my neck. "Quite. On your knees, John. Right there between the table and the sofa. We don't want you getting in the way."
My pulse hammered hard in my throat. In front of two girls, in our own living room, in the broad daylight of an afternoon. Yet the razor-sharp glint in my stepsister's eyes brooked not a second's delay. Lowering my head, I sank down onto the plush carpet and dropped onto my knees. The hunched posture jammed the rigid edge of the cage deep into the crease of my thighs, clamping the flesh and locking me into a silent, unforgiving vice.
Emma skimmed her notes, tapping a manicured fingernail against the glass screen, completely unaffected by my presence as she addressed Loona: "So, next week is going to be brutal. By Tuesday I need the summary for history. Four topic units, complete with a timeline. And Thursday the prep notes for the chemistry lab report."
"No problem," Loona replied smoothly, sipping her espresso and casting a detached glance down at me. "John has nothing better to do with his weekday evenings anyway. He'll type it all up for you. Formatted to your exact specs, delivered by seven in the morning before first period."
"Perfect," Emma purred. Then, casually letting her arm drop off the sofa cushion, she let her fingertips hover mere inches from my cheek in quiet mockery. "And Friday is the party at Till's place. Leon's picking me up, but we still need supplies beforehand. Would be great if you could help out a bit with that, John."
I stared down at the glass tabletop, my chest heaving with shallow breaths. Money again. My allowance again. And this time not just for coffee, but funding an entire evening's shopping run.
Loona read my thoughts effortlessly. Leaning forward, she hooked two cool fingers under my chin and drew my face up, forcing me to meet her gleaming eyes.
"You hear what Emma's telling you, sweetheart," she purred with silky amusement. "You're going to take care of it. No excuses, no delays. Emma comes first, understood?"
"Yes, Loona," I squeezed out.
Emma giggled, visibly intoxicated by how effortlessly she and Loona could direct my every move. Two girls carving my entire existence in half—one running my school days, the other holding my nights, my body, and my home.
When Loona released my chin to resume chatting with Emma about mundane school gossip, I remained motionless on the carpet before them.
"You know what, Loona?" Emma said suddenly, drawing out a sigh and tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "The couch is great and all, but my legs are completely dead from being on my feet all day."
Loona exchanged a knowing look with her, peered down at me, and casually tasted her espresso. "That's easily fixed. John, down on all fours. Hands flat on the rug, keep your back straight."
My stomach lurched. In the center of the living room, pinned between the coffee table and the couch cushions. But my stepsister's tone brooked no hesitation whatsoever. Lowering my chest, I planted my palms against the carpet and braced myself on hands and knees. The posture pulled the fabric of my sweatpants skin-tight, driving the rigid plastic of the cage mercilessly against my pelvic bone.
Emma didn't need to be told twice. Having already kicked off her shoes by the entrance, she lifted her legs without ceremony and rested her feet, clad in white socks, squarely across the small of my back. Her heels pressed distinctly through the cotton into my lower spine, her toes flexing idly as if testing the balance of her new ottoman.
"Oh, this is perfect," Emma murmured, settling back into the cushions with her iPad in hand.
Loona gave a cool smirk, slid out of her slippers with a fluid motion, and raised her legs as well. Her manicured, bare feet settled across my shoulder blades, resting close against the nape of my neck.
Their combined weight bore down on me heavily. Within moments my arms began to shake from the strain, the hard edges of the cage digging into my groin with every ragged, controlled breath. I was no longer a brother, a classmate, or an equal human being in that room—I had been reduced to a literal footrest, an object underneath them while they casually gossiped about schedules, assignments, and weekend parties.
Every micro-shift of their weight sent a jolt of ache through my spine. And yet, beneath the burning humiliation, a paralyzing, intoxicating surrender seeped through me. The perimeter around my life was entirely sealed now. There wasn't an angle left, not a single minute of the day where I wasn't being watched, steered, or utilized by one of them—and the most devastating part was the dark, unavoidable reality of how thoroughly I had already accepted it.
