The Next Day
Class Assignment
It was well into the wee hours of the morning when Monica left my room. Since I didn’t wake up until a little after nine, I had no idea that Monica left more than just my room. I came down hoping to see her smiling face, but she was nowhere to be found. I ate then got off to college for a class that I rarely miss going to!
Of course the class was already to start when I got there, so I went into the classroom and grabbed the first available seat, so I didn’t interrupt the professor’s lesson. And there she was in the second tier of seats. In the entire time I’ve been attending class, I never knew that Monica was taking the same class.
When the class was over, the professor laid out our latest graded papers for us to collect. Monica got her’s, way before I got mine, and I could tell by the look on her face that she didn’t agree with her grade. Or maybe it was the way she stormed out of the classroom. I grabbed my paper and was pleasantly surprised to see a better that was way above my usual “C+”
I left the classroom just in time to see two of my friends coming towards me.
“Hey Graham, up for a burger at the Lunchbox?” Eroll Martin asked me. With him was Steve Norris, one of my childhood friends. When Eroll said he was paying, of course I was suddenly hungry. Five minutes later we were sitting at a booth, ordering a burger, fries and a coke.
“So Graham have you heard that Monica is supposed to be living with someone twice her age and letting him fuck her daily!” Then “Weren’t you trying to get into her pants, Graham?”
I had to bite the inside of my right cheek to prevent me crying out, ”Dad isn’t that old and trust me he’s married to her!” but after I could speak, all I said was “We dated but trust me I wasn’t trying to get into her pants!” I must have had a disgusted look on my face because Steve told me to lighten up Eroll was just making conversation.
The food and drink came and we got down to some serious chewing when Monica and her friend Betty Thorpe came in and took a booth just inside the door. I don’t know why but i felt her eyes on the back of my neck, since i was sitting with my back to her. Then it was more than just her eyes.
“I didn’t know that we were in the same class, Graham!” A pause then she came from behind me to stand beside the booth I was in. “Maybe you could help me, Professor Givens doesn’t seem to understand my point of view!”
That was when Eroll piped up, “I bet you have two points! How could Givens not understand them?”
I looked at him, “Christ, Eroll, get your mind out of your fantasy and join the rest of us in reality!”
I turn my attention back to Monica, “I’ll make time to help you Monica!”
“Great, see you later, say at home then!” Monica went back to Betty and I was left with Eroll and Steve. Steve was in shock at what he heard, but Eroll opened his mouth and proved that College was no place for him.
“Damn Graham, that’s too bad that you’ll have her at your place with no chance of getting into her pants!”
I almost blurted out, “Well then I ‘ll just have to remember the past two days then won’t I!” But I grabbed a handful of fries and shoved them into my mouth. Eroll got the hint and shut up. Got up to go to the bathroom. When he was gone Steven spoke up.
“Sorry Graham, but Eroll was at a frat party and was thrown out for insulting a couple of the sorority sisters there! Now he is taking it out on anyone who even has a girl looking his way!” But then Steven put me on the spot. “But any idea what Monica meant by seeing you at home?”
“What when we dated she knew that I still live at home so she probably just thought that I would be there later!” Then I added, “That’s all!”
Steven bought what I said and resumed eating his burger and fries.I did the same even when Eroll came back. The three of us were quietly eating when we heard Monice and Betty get up and leave after saying goodbye to the cashier after paying for what they had!
Roughly twenty minutes later we did the same, Eroll and Steve going back to their dorm room while I went back home to await Monica’s return. I was slightly asleep in front of some lame reality show when Monica came in. I instantly became aware of her and could tell by the way she slammed her book bag down that her mood hadn’t improved any!
“Christ Monica, it can’t be that bad!” Then I went on, “I know that Professor Givens can be a total asshole but he must know what he’s teaching or why would the college employ him?”
Monica dug her paper out of her book bag and threw it at me. The first thing I noticed was the giant red inked “D-” and the note, see me when convenient for you so we can discuss a way you can earn a better grade!"
And trust me I knew the minute the last word left my mouth the answer to that! “You aren’t going to go see him are you, Monica?”
If looks could kill then dad would be coming back to attend my funeral! Then her words told me everything, “I would rather let that a-hole friend of yours Eroll touch me than Professor Givens”
I read her synopsis and scanned the rest of her paper and knew instantly that she had missed the point. Or else she wrote her paper at the very last moment. Then a thought came to me, and for some reason I voiced it.
“God! Tell me you didn’t write this after fucking dad, did you Monica?”
