Chapter 18

Cantalope
What is the reaction?
Chilly at best
You explain yourself with all urgency, expecting someone to ask questions, to send word. At the very least see some of the same shock you saw in Janine's eyes when you'd told her, but all you got were raised eyebrows and some concerned looks, "-which is why I need to continue on my way to Gerlangen with the relic."
The room was silent.
"As soon as possible."
Nothing.
"Now!"
The War Mother speaks up as you grow increasingly frustrated with your taciturn audience, "Sabine, you are in the Abbey of Sea Haven. Almost 600 leagues from White Rock and 200 leagues past Gerlangen if that was your original destination. If you travelled, as you say, by 'rowboat' it would have taken you over a week and we would have heard of your Abbey's demise." You stare at her, unbelieving. 600 leagues?! But it had only been a single night! "Furthermore, the sword you had tied to your ankle was no relic. Merely an old piece of iron, eaten by salt and time."
You stiffen. Perhaps this was all an elaborate ruse and War Mother Giselle was wrong when she told you where to retrieve the sword. Maybe all you'd done thus far had been for not. But the sword you'd carried through that storm was certainly not 'an old piece of iron,' it was brilliant and sharp and you'd be damned if you didn't feel the presence of the goddess when you touched it.
"-which leaves us where we are now. With a half drowned girl with false claims to sisterhood and an unbelievable story. You are welcome to stay and become a true sister, if that is what you sought, but we will tolerate no more of your lies. Am I understood Sabine?" Something is very wrong here, not the least of which being how you were treated, but your better judgment wins out and you lower your eyes in passive affirmation. Whatever was going on, you couldn't know what it was or retrieve the holy sword if you were kicked out of the Abbey.
"Good." The War Mother and her posse turn in unison to exit the room. Now that you were paying attention, there seemed to be something strange about their expressions. Blank. Like they were distracted and just going through the motions. None of them give you a second glance, filing out quietly after the War Mother. Janine is unable to mask her emotions as well as you and her mouth hangs open as she stares off after the War Mother. At least someone seemed to believe you.
