Check the smooth oak door

You take a deep breath, and try the knob on the oak door. It turns without resistance. You fully rewind the dead bolt, and slowly push the door open.

As much as you try to open the door slowly, it creaks despite your best intentions. Loud enough that the sound appears to echo throughout the house. Through the veil of darkness, you see a figure stirring from their bed, but it is so dark you can't tell whose silhouette's it might be.

Before your eyes can adjust to the darkness, something shuffles quickly within the dark room, and you hear a gruff voice yell out, "So this is how you repay me, by trying to mug me? You scum!"

The last thing you hear is a loud shotgun blast, as your body crumples to the floor.
