Chapter Eighteen: Embers in the Dark
The room was cloaked in a heavy silence, broken only by the faint hum of the city beyond the glass and the sound of their mingled breaths. The sheets were tangled around their legs, warm with the heat of their bodies. Ayan lay on his back, his arm draped around Saba, her cheek resting against his chest, the rhythmic thud of his heart steady beneath her ear.
The storm of their passion had ebbed, leaving in its wake a languid calm — but the spark between them refused to die.
Saba’s fingers traced lazy circles on his chest, her nails occasionally grazing his skin just enough to make him twitch. “Mmm,” she murmured, her voice still husky, “do you know what drove me wild tonight?”
Ayan tilted his head to glance down at her, lips curving into a grin. “Enlighten me.”
She smiled against his skin. “The way you wouldn’t let me breathe when you pressed me down… the way your body pinned mine until I had **** but to surrender. That kind of beastly hunger…” She exhaled a soft, satisfied sigh. “I loved every second of it.”
Ayan chuckled, his fingers sliding along the curve of her bare shoulder. “So the lady likes being conquered,” he teased, his tone low and wicked. “Good to know.”
Saba lifted her head slightly, her eyes gleaming in the dim light. “And you,” she whispered, brushing her lips along his jaw, “what was your favorite part?”
His grin widened as he thought back, his mind flashing with images — her arching body, her breathless moans, the way she clawed at his back as if she could pull him deeper. He kissed her temple before answering. “The way you begged me to go harder… and then pulled me closer when I did. That look in your eyes — like you wanted me to devour you.”
Her laugh was soft, throaty. “Maybe I did,” she admitted, nipping at his neck before settling back down against him. “And maybe I still do.”
For a moment, silence fell again, though it wasn’t empty. It was thick with the warmth of their shared secret, their bodies humming with memory. Ayan’s hand wandered absently, caressing the curve of her hip, but this time with no urgency — just the satisfaction of touch for touch’s sake.
“You realize,” she said, her voice lilting with mischief, “you’ve set the bar very high. If you’re going to keep me, you’ll have to keep outdoing yourself.”
Ayan smirked, tightening his hold around her. “Oh, don’t worry,” he murmured into her hair. “I’ve only just begun to show you what I can do.”
Her soft laugh vibrated against his chest, the sound mingling with the steady beat of his heart. She shifted closer, as though trying to melt into him completely, her hand pressing against his skin possessively.
After a long pause, Ayan tilted his head down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. The gesture was tender, almost reverent — so different from the feral passion that had consumed them earlier.
Saba’s eyes fluttered shut, her lips curving into a faint smile as she whispered, “Goodnight, Ayan.”
“Goodnight, Saba,” he replied softly.
Within minutes, her breathing deepened, steady and calm. Ayan lingered awake for a moment longer, his mind replaying flashes of their night — her moans, her laughter, her tears, her fire. He felt something inside him settle, a rare kind of peace.
Then, with Saba in his arms and the lingering heat of their bodies warming the sheets, he finally closed his eyes and drifted into sleep.
