Chapter 6 - Suspicions

Emily stood in the doorway of her bedroom, her arms crossed and her brow furrowed as she observed her step-brother, Jake, from a distance. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about him lately, but she couldn't quite put her finger on what it was. As she watched him interact with their family, she noticed a subtle change in his demeanor - a newfound confidence that seemed to come from nowhere.

Over the past few weeks, Emily had observed strange occurrences at school as well. People who had never given Jake the time of day suddenly seemed drawn to him, their behavior altered in inexplicable ways. Jake shrugged, feigning indifference. "I guess I haven't really noticed anything like that. Maybe they're just starting to see how awesome I am."

Emily raised an eyebrow but decided not to press the issue further, for now. "It's like I can't help myself around him," Chloe whispered, her eyes wide with fear. "I don't even like him, but I find myself doing whatever he wants."

Ashley nodded, her expression equally troubled. "I know what you mean. I've been feeling the same way."

"What are you talking about, Emily?" he asked, feigning innocence. "I don't know what you're talking about."
