Chapter 24
First threat
It had been a couple of weeks since I began teaching, and I had discovered I was extremely good at it; most of my students were on track to pass with flying colours. I had also started becoming more familiar with members of the town, the sheriff in particular had become a good friend ever since I saved Elena's life We both spent a fair amount of time chatting whenever we ran into one another.
All was not good, though, over the last week, bodies had started to be found, torn apart, with their blood drained. I had managed to get a look at one of the victims, and it was not what I expected. No doubt it was a vampire, but this vampire was savage, tearing its victims apart. I had my suspicions of who could be doing it, but I was not sure my thoughts were that Damon Salvatore was responsible, like in the show. But the level of mutilation the bodies suffered was not how I remembered him acting.
I had also started to take precautions around Caroline and Elena to avoid compulsion by a vampire. Slipping vervain into their food when the opportunity presented itself, in the hope it would be enough to protect them from the vampire. I had also warned both Rose and Alexandria about said vampire, if it was Damon, like I thought then they had nothing to worry about, as they both had centuries on him and were both trained to fight by me.
"Mr Mikaelson, are you listening" I heard Caroline's voice as she knocked on the wooden desk in front of me, effectively knocking me from my thoughts. "Sorry, Miss Forbes, I lost myself in my thoughts for a moment there. What can I do for you?" I responded, knowing full well what she wanted. Caroline was in one word dedicated, everything she did had to be perfect, I could admire it, I really did, but I also saw the dangers in it, wasting time away just to get a fraction of a per cent better was risky. That was probably why she was here, to ask me to read over a piece of work from one of her many classes. It was my fault, really, I had told my students that my door was always open. Caroline was the only one who had taken up the offer, coming and asking my opinion on whatever she was working on that day. In fact, it had become a daily ritual, every day on the first break, she would come and ask my opinion on a new piece of work. I truly did not mind, as it gave me something to do but it did surprise me that no other teacher would do the same.
"Well, Mr Mikaelson, I have an essay I had to write for physics, I was hoping that you would not mind looking it over," she said, a shy smile on her face. Smiling at her I held out my hand to take the papers. As she handled it, I saw her bring up a chair sitting opposite me, watching with great interest as I read her work.
"You have outdone yourself again, Miss Forbes", I told her without one word of a lie. She always did, in fact, her intelligence seemed to rival some of the smarter people that I had met in my thousand years of life. "Thank you, are you sure though?" she asked, with slight nervousness in her voice. "I would not lie to you, as always you seem to get your work as perfect as possible". I responded, watching as her eyes lit up from the compliment. She stood as I handed her the paper back, "Thank you, Mr Mikaelson, you have been a big help. I hope you enjoy your weekend, " she said, a smile back on her face. "No problem, Miss Forbes, you enjoy your weekend too," I responded.
She started leaving before stopping at the door and turning around before starting to speak, "Mr Mikaelson, there's a party this weekend in the woods, are you going?". "Miss Forbes, you realise that telling me about a party where there will be no doubt people drinking while underage is probably not the best idea. Not too mention that it is inappropriate to be asking one of your teachers to attend said party" I spoke. Causing her too pause for a second, then start speaking again "I thought you would already know, Alexandria is coming and I thought she might have told you, plus your cool right so you won't shut it down" she answered a slightly **** look filling her face. "She did not tell me, and no I won't shut it down, I suppose I could go with the animal attacks at the moment it maybe safer to have someone that is not drinking attending" I said relief filling her face as she realised that I would not shut down the party.
After that was settled, she said her goodbyes and then turned and left. The party, the one that I saw Damon attend and attack Vicki Donavon. This could be the opportunity I needed to confirm whether or not it was Damon who was responsible for the far more vicious attacks that had been happening. I would attend mainly for that reason, but it would also be a good opportunity to keep an eye on Stefan as well. I had no idea if the Stefan here was like his show counterpart and only fed on animal blood or if he was as bad as his brother.
I started leaving the school heading towards my car, seeing Alexandria talking to Elena over at one side of the. School,, with a wave, she acknowledged that she had seen me, so I sat in the car and began waiting for her to finish the conversation she was having. It was at that moment I saw her wave me over, walking over to the pair, I greeted them both. "Would you mind dropping Elena off, her bus got cancelled?" asked Alexandria, with a smile. I agreed before noticing that she was looking over her shoulder, focusing on something in the distance. I looked at the way she was staring and noticed somebody standing across the road, staring right at her. As soon as I managed to see him he disappeared, a vampire, had to be with that speed. "We should get going" I said, both of them quickly agreeing we set off.
After dropping Elena off I was left alone with Alexandria. "There was a vampire at the school, not Stefan, another one", I said. She looked at me before answering, "I saw him briefly too, should we find him?". Shaking my head, I started to speak again, "No, I imagine we will see him again at the party later, though do not engage with him unless absolutely necessary". "You're going then", she responded, picking up on my words. "Yes, Caroline, let it slip earlier, and I have a feeling that trouble may arise there" She nodded, thinking on my words, before agreeing that my presence was probably for the best.
That was how I found myself in the woods surrounded by dozens of my students. Most had seemed slightly wary of my presence here, but they soon realised I was not here to stop their fun and had accepted my being here. At the moment, I was standing leaning against a tree, observing the clearing where the party was taking place. Inside the clearing stood groups of students huddled into groups, a few kegs were dotted around on pop-up tables, and chairs littered the clearing.
"Mr Mikaelson, you came" I looked over to see an obviously tipsy Caroline walking in my direction, followed by Elena, Bonnie and Alexandria. "Yes, well, someone needed to make sure things did not get out of hand", I said, looking over the small group. "That's a good idea, I thought you were here just to shut us down when I first saw you here" Bonnie spoke up. "Everyone seems to have thought that, I suppose I can not blame them, though I am smart enough to know if I shut this one down, another would just take its place elsewhere," I responded after a moment of thought.
Alexandria came closer too, watching as the tipsy Caroline half leaned on me and half leaned on the tree next to me. "I think the blonde likes you" she spoke in my native tongue. I taught her that about a century ago; it had proven quite useful in making sure our conversation went unknown to others, and the other members of Mystic Falls High had gotten used to the oddity by now. "Perhaps, though I have no interest in that particular avenue" I responded in the same tongue. Nodding she switched back to English before talking to the others around me.
"Are you not drinking Mr Mikaelson"? Caroline slurred out almost falling over as she leaned forward to talk to me. I put my hand out to steady her while responding, "No, I am driving, plus I can not really keep an eye on you all if I am drunk", I responded to her. It was true although my enhanced physiology made it almost impossible for **** to affect me, taking both a high quality and high quantity to even get me slightly tipsy.
I was knocked out of my thoughts by a shrill scream filling the air and a voice shouting for help. I was moving in the direction it came from before the call for help had even finished, moving just slow enough not to appear inhuman. I was tossed the clearing by the time the students around me had started reacting. I could see what was happening from here: a young man, Jeremy Gilbert, from the looks of it, was dragging an injured woman into the clearing. The scent of blood filled my nostrils, and I could make out the two fang marks in her neck. How did I miss it? The vampire had shown up, and I was distracted by talking.
I reached them before telling Jeremy to put her down, looking at her, I could tell it was definitely Vicki Donovan, reaching down to her neck, I applied pressure while instructing Jeremy to ring an ambulance. While he did that, Vicki tried to speak her words no more than a whisper, "vampire", she gasped out. Fortunately, she was so quiet that only I, Jeremy and her brother Matt, who had appeared at our side, heard her. Putting pressure on the wound, I looked through the forest, seeing the same figure I saw outside the school standing, observing. I could give chase but that would mean leaving Vicki to most likely bleed out from the deep wound in her neck, as I could hear her heartbeat already

](http://fading.It) was a couple of minutes later that an ambulance arrived once again, followed by Sheriff Forbes. As I let them tend to the young girl, I stood, locking eyes with the sheriff before she started speaking. "Asmund, we meet again, and somehow you're saving a life again", she said, a tone of suspicion in her voice. "Yes, I would prefer that we stop meeting under these circumstances," I responded. With that simple greeting, her interrogation of me began. I answered with as much detail as I thought possible, hoping that it might lessen her suspicion. "Why were you here in the first place? Surely you should have shut this party down as soon as you heard of it", she asked finally. "We both know that if I had done that, they would have just moved it elsewhere, and this way, at least I could keep an eye on things, make sure it did not get out of hand". She seemed to think on my words for a moment before nodding and saying her goodbyes, turning around to head to her squad

](http://car.At) that point, everyone had already cleared out, heading home as quickly as they could, hoping to avoid the sheriff as they did. Yet even before I reached my car I could see the four gathered figures around it. "Mr Mikaelson, is Vicki going to be alright?" came the familiar voice of Bonnie. "She will, but we should still get out of here. The sheriff says that whatever animal attacked her could still be around. It seemed as though I was driving them home, the four of them, Caroline, Elena, Bonnie and Alexandri, squeezing into the car." Mr Mikaels, could you draw us off at the Mystic Grill? We should try to get Caroline to sober up a bit before she heads home," Elena said. I could not argue with her logic. Caroline had definitely had too much to drink, and I imagine her mother would flip out seeing her in this state. "Sure, I am starved anyway, and I am yet to try the food from the Mystic Grill" As I said that, they tried to assure me that they could handle it, but when it became obvious that I would be going with them, I could see a bit of relief on their faces.
The Mystic Grill was a small restaurant in town, one of the only ones in fact, as we walked through the doors I saw many familiar faces, those of the students that attended the party. Obviously, they had a similar idea of sobering up before they went home. We sat and ordered burgers for us all, following the recommendation of Elena and Bonnie, and I sat to enjoy my food, listening to the conversation at our table with casual interest. After eating and after many coffees C,aroline sobered up enough for me to drop her off s,o we left. Dropping off each of them until only me and Alexandria were left."The vampire was there, though I did not get a good look at him" I said to her before allowing silence to fall over us.
