Chapter 13
Escape
The daggers, as it turns out, are evil little things, although well-made, in the show it had never been mentioned how they worked, but it did not take me long to figure out how they did. A dagger, when used, would drain the magic from a vampire's body, dessicating them and leaving them in effectively a coma until the dagger was removed and the vampire could regenerate the magic inside of them. I had managed to fight this effect by draining the magic flowing into the dagger as quickly as it drained from me, creating a nearly endless loop. I had only passed out as I was using magic outside of that, draining my magical energy even quicker. I also remembered that in the show, they were stated to kill the wielder; vampires being already dead were apparently unaffected by this, allowing them to use them without harm. Although that did raise the question of how the brotherhood of the five/six could use them without dying. Alas, these questions would remain unanswered for now, what did matter was finding a way to make myself completely immune to their effects. Perhaps a ring or an amulet of some kind that negated its effects, it would require a deeper understanding of the magic in the daggers, luckily I had two, the one stabbed into me and the one stabbed into Rebekah.
We had been on the boat for two days, and the mood was still sombre. Marco, the second in command of my heretics, felt as though he had failed both me and Anne. He had taken an older brother role towards the heretics, teaching them and trying to protect them at every turn. I tried to assure him that there was little he could do, but nothing would console him. The other heretics had also been deeply affected; they considered themselves to be extremely powerful. They are, without a doubt, the second most powerful group of vampires after my sibling and me. Unfortunately, though they had not realised how massive a gap there was between us and them, Klaus, whose full power was locked away, while also being injured, tore one of them apart with ease. Though this did not completely worry them, instead I could see the determination on their faces to get stronger, something that I would encourage.
I let myself rest for the remainder of the journey to France, it would take a while as we set off from Newcastle upon Tyne and would have to go the long way around England, then across to France. Fortunately, that gave me time to recover from my fight with Klaus and also start planning my **** against him. I could not kill him, or give him the same treatment as Mikael as that would prevent the birth of Hope. Who would not only be a really powerful asset she was also innocent in this, so preventing her birth would just be wrong. I would truly have to think of a way to deal with him properly, I knew that once he found out where Rebekah and I were hiding, he would come for

](http://us.It) took us around a week and a half to reach France, the port had become larger since we left all those years ago. I walked off the ramp with my sister and those we had sired, following not far behind as some workers offloaded what cargo was on the ship. Looking around the dock, I found the place I was looking for, a large warehouse with a hand-painted sign that said 'Louis shipping'. While I owned the business, it was less conspicuous for it to be in the name of my right-hand man. We walked through the doors and met a sight that assured me, Louis stood in the centre of the room with a few other vampires, no doubt those he had turned. When he saw me his smile widened, stepping forward to shake my hand "My Lord I heard what had happened to you and feared the worse, I am glad that my fears were for nought" he said as we shook hands "Not entirely for nought, we need a place to lay low for a few years maybe longer, how are our holdings in Greece, perhaps we could stay there for a while"? I responded while returning the handshake. "Of course, my Lord, I shall make the arrangements, until then you should say at the villa here in France, there is no doubt enough room for you all", he continued. After setting that we all got onto the carriages that were waiting for us and set out.
We had stayed at the villa in France for almost a week before setting off on the long journey to Greece, a country that I had always wanted to visit but never had the time. Luckily for me, Louis had made some investments on my behalf in the thriving olive oil and pottery industries.
Arriving in Greece we were welcomed by the mountainous terrain and warm weather, certainly an improvement on the rainy weather of England. This was where we were planning to rebuild, to recover our strength before I would go to fight Klaus once again. As we arrived in the town, we were to be staying, a small man came to greet us before leading us to a decently sized house. While not as grandiose as some of the dwellings I had lived in, it was cosy and would help us lay low. I walked through the door before separating myself from the rest of our group, stopping in a private room, I looked back on the last few weeks, at how everything had gone so wrong so quickly. I had tried to help Klaus, he needed the blood of a doppelganger to create hybrids, knowing this mother had made it so the only way to break the curse was by sacrificing a doppelganger, effectively making him unable to make hybrids. But he had to be arrogant and paranoid thinking that he knew best and that we were all plotting against him. Not to mention my siblings, they had gone out of their way to try and convince Klaus that he needed Katherine alive, and it led to all of them getting daggered. But there was no point in thinking about it too much, such thoughts would just distract me from planning to get them back. Pulling out my sword, I looked at it. After being destroyed by Mikael, I had taken it to the best blacksmith I could find, who reforged it into a blade even better than the original. Now, though it was shadowed even that, runes were carved into its entire surface, simple but effective ones, such as one to make every cut ignite in white hot flames. Another to make it far stronger than even the most durable steel, and finally one to make it self in case something did manage to break it. Just how I hoped it would turn out, as one of the most formidable weapons around, perfect really. I would take it with me to fight Klaus again but I knew that would not be enough. I needed to find a way to bypass his daggers, as although two are in my possession, he may try to use one that is embedded in another of my siblings ' to subdue me. But first, I needed to bury the remains of my lost heretic; her remains had been preserved with magic until we could settle down and lay her to rest

](http://properly.It) was the night that we had arrived, every one of us was gathered around a grave, inside lay an ornate coffin. Annes' remains lay inside preserved with magic. I stepped forward to speak "Anne had been with us for almost two centuries. I remember the day I found her, she was fleeing persecution from her coven for being a siphon. When I came across her, she immediately tried to fight me, assuming I was a threat to her. I admired that even when she had lost her home and her family she did her best to keep going. She will not be forgotten, her sacrifice will forever be remembered, as she was family to me". I stepped back after speaking and wrapped my arm around Rebekah who had tears trailing down her face. One by one, the rest of the heretics stepped forward to speak, recounting their encounters with Anne. Eventually, there was no more left to say. My fellow heretics and I lowered the coffin into the ground before filling the hole in. Resting just past the hole, a marble headstone sat with Anne's name carved into it. I left heading to my chambers with a deep feeling of sadness in my heart.
