"Hey, he can't be smaller than you," Carrie joked, elbowing you. Then she turned serious. "Look, I have to pursue this path, I can't explain it. But some of those strangers you suggested, how much would we still be in each other's lives? At least with this, we can be family." She kissed your cheek, then departed with her suitcases onto the flight to Florida.
