Chapter 22 by thestarwarrior thestarwarrior

What happens in the Deni camp?

Ceno has a proposal.

As you enter Deni’s encampment your military eye notices immediately how lightly armed and poorly defended it was, at least as far as a military post gose. Their armed men consist mostly of caravan guards and light skirmishers. These men (and a few women too) while certainly big and strong enough, stand out from almost all the Alliance armies due to their barbarian armor and axes. The armor was fashioned from the furs of wolfs and bears that was almost as thick and dark as the warrior's beards, Compared to the clean-shaven faces and sparkling plates bronze worn by the hoplites of the Hellenic city-states and your Sisters, these men looked both fierce and dangerous, but you question how they would stand up to an organized advance of spearmen behind walls of interlocked shields.

As you passed through their gate you were quick to notice just how large it was compared to the other camps. At first you thought it was just a poor designed choice made by a city that let other nations fight their wars for them. A narrow gate would have made it easier for even one or two of the axe-wielding warriors to hold the line, but as you make your way through the center of the camp you realize why the gate is so large. This is a merchant outpost, not a military one. All throughout the camp, Deni’s merchants were setting up stands so they can buy and sell the pillaged loot from the doomed city.

“Ceno,” you turned to the Deni prince with a curious look on your face, “If I didn’t know any better, I say that Deni was getting ready to take Athenapolis’ place as the merchant capital of the world.”

“That’s the plan,” he replies plainly, “Granted we are going to be doing a few things differently. The slavers guild will not be welcome in our lands, in fact we do not intend to sanction the sale of slaves at all. Neither will we be relying on questionable private mercenary companies to protect our holdings.” He gestures to the wall facing your camp where a gate merging your two camps together has already been constructed. “Accor has proven itself to be a noble and valuable ally and we know of your dim views of slavery…or underserved slavery as you would put it.” As you near the large pavilions near the back of the camp with gold embroidered banners flying high and armed guards posted by the heavy flaps, he stops and turns to face you.

“We will not stop you from performing your blood vengeance, nor will we keep you from converting the women of Athenapolis into Amazons, but I will request that you send any slaves you free from inside Athenapolis our way.” Ceno must see the surprise on your face because he explains his reasoning. “I'm afraid that instead of being freed from their captivity, that most of those poor souls will end up at the grand auction the United Armies are planning as vengeance for the sale of Amara the flower of Helios.”

“But why would Deni want these slaves?” you ask him.

“I intend to hire them,” he replies, “They haven’t wronged you, if anything they have suffered the same kind of fate your captured Sisters did. Ask the women you find if they would like to join your Amazons, just as you ask ours. If they decline send them, the men, and the children my way, along with anyone else who isn’t a citizen of Athenapolis. You know how much traffic this city gets, there are many innocent traders trapped inside those towering walls.”

“You want me and my Sisters to sort out captives in the middle of a war zone?” you ask him, “Do you have any idea how difficult that would be?”

“I know, it’s asking a lot of you,” he shrugs humbly, “It would be quicker for you to just kill all the men and convert all the women by **** if needed, your numbers would swell to greater than what they were before the war, but at what cost?” His eyes search yours with a maturity and wisdom that you don't remember from the boy you knew years ago. “Would you rather quickly behead the innocent or slowly behead those truly guilty?”

Do you take the deal or turn him down?
