Chapter 122

What do they talk about?
Cecil.
Pat suddenly remembered something. "Adam, don't kill him yet," she spoke into a walkie-talkie. The man on the screen nodded in confirmation. "If I don't remind him about that once an hour, he's gonna squash Andrew's melon. Golems, am I right?"
"What do you want?" Madison asked. Pat ignored her.
"Wow, she looks great! Look at that attention to detail." She approached Madison and reached out to feel her hair, but the girl shrank back. "The hair is so tricky, isn't it?"
"What do you want?" Ross repeated.
"Well, I didn't think Madison here would bring another golem with her. I guess you're just a freebie. I want to know what you know about my husband-"
"Nothing!" Madison said. "He just went crazy and quit!"
Pat rolled her eyes and sighed impatiently. "Yes, yes, I get it. You can't tell me yet. Don't worry, we'll fix that. Now what's your story? Clearly not as well-made as Madison here. Are you another fake student?"
"Fuck you," Ross said. "I'm not a golem."
She looked him over appraisingly for a moment and cocked an eyebrow. "You know, I think you may actually be telling the truth. Doesn't matter, because in a second Madison will tell me everything I need to know."
Madison was aghast. "You think by threatening Andrew-"
"Threatening Andrew?" Pat laughed again. "Why would I need to do that when I have one of these?"
She reached into a cabinet and pulled out a small stone. Ross's face when white when he saw it. She studied his reaction carefully.
"Oh, you already know what this is? I'm impressed, you've gotten into some very high-level stuff here. I thought this was all just some college kid building himself a harem or something. To be honest, when there's a bunch of golems running around pretending to be people it's usually a harem."
She put her hand on the stone and began to chant. Ross begged her stop but Madison shushed him.
"What?" Ross said in surprise.
"Don't..." she said, staring at the stone with awe. "I can feel it... it's... I need to hear it..."
"Madison, are you ok?" Ross asked, putting a hand on her face. She didn't respond, but just stared at the stone. "Mads, talk to me! What's going on?"
"I have to hear it..." she murmured under her breath. Her eyes were glassy and a tear ran down her left cheek. "I need it..."
Suddenly the chanting stopped. Madison's eyes went impossibly wide and she let out a tiny yelp before collapsing into Ross's arms.
Looks like Madison's out of the game.
