He staggered into the living area and found Chloe watching television. She was still wearing the heavier makeup and somewhat revealing clothes but he had got a little used to them over the last few weeks.

She told him to sit down. He slumped at the dinner table and Chloe brought him coffee and water as well as some painkillers. She told him they could talk later and Sean nursed himself back to feeling a little more human before having a shower and getting dressed. When he came out of the living room he found Chloe at the table with another coffee for him and his laptop.

“I’ve sent you an email that I want you to look at,” she said. She was in serious mode.

A little confused, he sat down and looked at his computer. Sure enough, there was an email with a number of links labelled with business names. “What is this?” he asked.

“Job applications. I suggest you fill them out as soon as possible.”

He was still feeling blurry. “Why?”

“Because your recent promotions have put you in a very desirable position. A young accountant rising so quickly up the corporate ranks is a hot property. You should seize that opportunity,” she said. “The other reason is that you are a laughing stock in your office. She made an excellent point. “I have been keeping my eye open for great opportunities for you. I had to keep updating it because you took so long.”

“Sean, I’m not the same woman I was when this started. I was for a while but you took so long. I’m different.”

“What are you talking about?”

“It’s hard to give yourself to a man for so long and not be impacted by it. I was doing it for you at first but now.” There was a silence. “Garry’s a dirty bastard and I kind of like that in him. He rubbed off on me.”

“What are you getting at?” He was worried about where this was going.

“I didn’t just fuck Garry.”

Chloe looked at him. Her face wore a dark expression. “It wasn’t just Tom.”
