Chapter 7 by Koriandr Koriandr

What did Jason do?

Cast a spell. (Reality shift.)

Mustering her will, she flipped through the pages. Visualize the outcome vividly. "You can do this, Zatanna..." she frowned, unable to say her own name. If she ever encountered magic again after fixing this, it'd be too soon. Giving in to the compulsion to cast a spell, she read the incantation aloud. She had higher hopes for the words of the book fixing her given her last attempt at logomancy only managed to somehow make her even more like Zatanna.

"Nruter em ot ym eurt mrof!"

She chanted with a flick of her wand. A hopeful grin spread across her ruby lips as her magician outfit glowed. A magnificent white aura encapsulated her clothes, but died down almost immediately, along with Jason's optimism.

"Why didn't it work?!"

Jason frowned, running a hand nervously through her raven locks. She had to talk to Bruce. There was no fixing this herself. Sure, he'd laugh, Jason would never live it down. But it beat being stuck as a chick for the foreseeable future. Zatanna's personality had been suspended for now, but it subtly impacting small things now like the way she was standing, with her hand on her hip and her weight shifted to one leg. That was a small victory, at least.

"I have to get out of here..."

Jason huffed. How was she supposed to sneak out in such a flashy outfit?

"Who the hell are you? Give me my body back!"

A familiar sounding voice piped up.

"Uh... who said that?"

Jason glanced around the empty dressing room. She sincerely hoped the magic of the Lazarus Pit hadn't finally driven her insane.

"It's me, Zatanna! Down here!"

She hesitantly glanced down at her attire, seeing nothing had changed at all.

"Tell me I'm not going crazy.... I don't see you...?"

"I've taken the form of your clothes! Which are actually my clothes!"

"Wait... you're Zatanna? For real?"

"Obviously! And you're the freak who stole my body!"

"Hold up, you think I did this on purpose?!" Jason frowned. "I'm Red Hood! Y'know, one of the Bat Family?" She couldn't believe she was not only stuck in the body of a woman, but she was also having a conversation with her button-up. "You've been missing. Bats sent me to find you, found your wand instead. Connect the dots," she gestured to herself. Could she even see her? "I tried to change myself back and now my clothes are talking!"

"Oh dear..." Zatanna sighed. "We need to fix this, but we need a professional."

"Aren't you a professional?"

"Yes, but if you couldn't already tell, I'm not in a position to be casting powerful, body altering magic. Those spells aren't for the inexperienced either..."

"Hey, at least I tried something! I managed to get you talking, didn't I?"

"Fair," she conceded. "I'm thinking John would be our best bet."

"Constantine? The drunk?"

"You have someone better in mind?"

"No..."

"John it is."

"How'd this happen anyway?"

"I'm not entirely sure, but I suspect it's the doing of either Circe or Faust. What for? No clue."

Jason tugged at her jacket carefully, walking one foot in front of the other. Hips swaying with the confidence Zee usually carried herself with. She followed her clothes' directions to the back exit. Setting foot in the dark alley, she headed out to the curb.

"So uh... does this feel for you..?" She whispered to her outfit as she walked. "Being er... inanimate..?"

"Honestly? Really odd," Zee replied. "I feel the warmth of my... or I guess your entire body. It's not unpleasant."

"How are you coping with being me? Gotta be pretty jarring going from edgy gunslinger to beautiful magician, am I right?"

"I don't wanna talk about it." Jason shook her head, reaching the sidewalk. "Where to?"

Where did Jason and Zatanna go?
