Chapter 3
by Drakkwall
What Manner of Being Is This Keeper?
Carlos Shardock, Human Trader from the City of Reedburgh, of the Cravian Empire
Carlos Shardock had been raised in the city of Reedburgh, his mother and father working as merchants at the large central market of the city, selling sought out resources like stone, metal, food, water, wood and the likes. Young Carlos found his calling as a trader as he helped out at their store at the market, he had managed to buy a basket of apples from an elderly woman for a decent price and then sold them to the Royal chef of Duke Quillan the Third, Lord of Reedburgh, for three times the amount he brought them for.
He started out small, buying cheap food supplies from the farmers, eggs, milk, vegetables, fruits, grains, fresh water and other good items, and then sold them for a higher price to the Royal Chef and the restaurants of the city, who always sought after the freshest of wares. When he turned sixteen had young Carl earned a reputation as a well resourced trader who sold only the freshest goods for a good price. He expanded his views with the money he had collected from his work, he brought an old mule and a small cart, rode out into the forest around Reedburgh and brought furs, meat, herbs and spices from the hunters, rangers and villagers who lived in the area, selling them fresh food supplies he got from the farmers in trade.
The young man's ambitions payed off and within two years had he created an airtight trade routine between the farmers, the city and the forest dwellers, taking a small caravan of five large carts dragged by two horses each, guarded by large hounds and some guards from the Lord himself who had rewarded the young merchant with these guards along with a trade privilege outside of Reedburgh for his excellent work for the city.
Carlos was no pretty man, he was a commoner from birth who had turned into a trader who earned a lot of gold, he was tall easily 7 point six feet in height, his body built like a bear's, thick limbs, large hands with very thick fingers and a very fat belly. His head was stereotypical of a trader, thick black curly hair in a bowl cut along with a thick black curly beard, his skin tanned from hours of working in the sun, a pair of brown eyes beneath his thick black eyebrows. In short he looked like a fat bear the size of a giant, though he was not as tall as those ten to twelve feet behemoths.
When he turned twenty-four had Carlos Shardock become a very rich and important nobleman among the trade in the empire when he was given the status of Baron by the Empress herself. He had a big house, his parents were proud of him, still working their own business as a way to pass time even if they were retired. Even with his not so good looking body was Carl sought after by many women, common and noble alike. Yes life was good for the Trade Baron, as Carlos had come to be called, but then things got bad, really, really bad.
What went bad for Carlos Shardock, the Trade Baron of Reedburgh?
