Candace is in a trance and can't answer him

After a couple of seconds, Candace just stared at him blankly, not reaching for her drink.

"Well?" he prompted her again. And yet no answer.

With this, Candace had truly lost it all - no stuff, no family to talk to, and now not even her ability to speak. Instead she was stuck in a trance, an animal stranded in a stranger's house, as he waved his hand in front of her and even pushed her on the shoulder to no response.

"Oh, come on now!" the man grew a bit frustrated as he grabbed his phone and started calling 911.

"Hello, 911?" he began, "I have a woman I let in my house who's not being very responsive at the moment.
