Chapter 16 by Nero24

Start shooting or leave quietly?

Can’t risk staying overnight. Have to kill them.

“Cover your ears,” you say to her as you turn off your safety.

Carmen’s eyes widen. “What? Wait–!” she cries out and presses her palms against her ears as you begin firing.

The first cavie falls immediately, the bullet passing straight through his head. The others all perk up and begin screeching angrily, showing off big, thick teeth as they search for you.

You stay where you are, taking aim and firing, once, twice, five more times, until each cavie goes down.

You leave your cover and Carmen follows after you shakily. All but one of the cavemen are dead, hooting weakly and crawling forward despite useless legs, leaving a trail of blood behind it. you swiftly walk up behind the thing and fire a bullet in the back of its head, ending its suffering.

“You didn’t have to kill them,” comes Carmen’s voice from behind you. You turn to see her eyes scrunched shut, arm grabbing her elbow.

“Yes, I did,” you assure her.

“We could’ve avoided them,” she stresses. “If we had gone ar–” she screams suddenly as one of the downed cavemen roars and clamps a powerful hand around her ankle. It’s on her for less than a second before you lift the rifle and fire a round through its forehead.

Yes,” you stress. “I did.”

She shivers and grits her teeth, stepping away from the corpse, saying nothing. You look away angrily. She wasn’t talking. Good. The last thing you needed was a fucking morality check after all this–

Boom.

You pause and turn.

Boom.

Carmen turns as well, and you watch the road further down. The booms continue, each one making the abandoned cars shudder.

“What is that?” she whispered.

Your heart hammers in your chest. Cavemen didn’t hunt alone, and the group you just killed were too small. They were split up, hunting for something…

Boom.

Screams and howls echo across the street as a group of a dozen more cavemen turn the corner and begin sprinting your way.

You curse and aim your rifle, but something makes you pause. The cavies don’t seem mad; their screeches are more frantic than enraged. You look closely as they close in and see fear etched into their faces.

Boom.

Boom.

BOOM.

Your eyes widen and your heart drops. They aren’t hunting anymore. They’re being hunted.

A loud roar echoes through the world as a giant T-Rex rounds the corner, crushing beneath its feet and bending down to swallow cavemen whole.

And it's heading towards you.

What the hell are you supposed to do now?
