Calling Shubhra

Shubhra picked up on the third ring. “What the fuck, dude, it’s like three am?” She asked, her voice deep as she groaned into the phone.

“Shubhra, we need to talk,” I said, wincing slightly as I prepared myself for a torrent of expletives and curses that would come pouring out in a few seconds. You wouldn’t expect it from a five foot two Indian girl, but Shubhra had the filthiest mouth I knew.

Surprisingly enough, none of that happened, although I figured that she was too tired to really be angry. “Talk about what?” She groaned, “What the fuck could you possibly want to talk about at three am?”

“Tell her that you need to meet her,” Julia said.

“What, meet her? At three am?” I asked back. Julia speaking in my head was still taking some time to get used to, having another voice in your mind, it was incredibly disconcerting.

“Tell her that it’s urgent, and something that you can’t talk about over the phone.” She prodded, and I just sighed.

“Shubhra, listen, it’s really really important, I can’t talk about it over the phone,” I said, feeding her the same words that Julia had told me.

“Oh for fuck’s sake, Andreas,” Shubhra sighed, “Fine, ugh, where the fuck would we even meet?”

I thought about that for a few seconds; my house was obviously out of contention, hell, even I didn’t want to stay here right now. Shubhra’s place wasn’t really a good idea either, I didn’t want to cause any trouble over there. I tried to think of a half decent place, when Julia spoke up, “How about Waffle House?”

“Waffle House?” I asked back, “Why Waffle House of all places?” Admittedly, Waffle House really hadn’t been anywhere near the top of my list. Hell, I didn't even know if there was one anywhere near me.

“I mean, they’re open all the time. Plus, it’s decently well lit and seems like the safest option.”

I raised my eyebrow and shook my head. Getting told to go to Waffle House by a sex demon to tell my best friend about said sex demon, what had my life come to.

A sigh slipped out of my mouth as I spoke into the phone, “Alright, how about Waffle House?”

“Waffle House, are you fucking kidding me?” Shubhra asked, causing me to wince slightly, “You want me to get up and go to a fucking Waffle House at three am?”

“I’ll explain it once we get there?” I offered weakly in consolation.

Shubhra groaned, “You are such a fucking asshole, I don’t even know if there’s a Waffle House near me.” She paused for a few seconds, “Okay, there’s one about twelve miles away from my place,” Shubhra sent me the link, “Does this work too?”

“Yeah, that works, I’ll head out now and see you there.”

“Fine, I fucking hate you, Andreas. Bye,” Shubhra said, cutting the phone before I could tell her goodbye as well.

Julia chuckled, “She seems fun.”

I laid there for a few seconds, staring at my phone as I looked up at the ceiling. “She’s a ray of sunshine,” I said with a sigh as I got up and slipped into a pair of jeans and a jacket. I stepped out of the room, looking around to see if there were any ‘noises’ like before.

“They’re asleep, both of them had a lot of fun,” Julia said smugly.

“Whatever.” I said, shaking my head as I slipped out and got into my car. Mom and Dad were thinking of selling it, but I had managed to convince them not to, even though it was pretty shitty and was almost always on the verge of falling apart, it pretty much was one of my favorite things in the world. It was my first car, and I loved it like it was my baby. I turned the key for a few seconds, muttering under my breath as I waited for the engine to stop stuttering, and after a couple of minutes, the engine finally started and I was on my way to meet Shubhra.
