Taking place in the modern day, this comic follows the adventures of multi-billionaire industrialist, David Merrywether II, son of David & Irene Merrywether. The Merrywether family were vacationing in Burma when the Civil War popped off; the assurances that the resort they were staying at was safe proved to ring hollow when it was stormed by an anti-Western rebel faction who wasted no time in opening fire indiscriminately, turning the once idealic resort into a killing field, with David Sr. and Irene being one of the casualties. Young David was the only survivor, which he managed by running deep into the jungle and hiding until nightfall.

He would eventually be found a tigress named Tamara who instead of eating him, raised him like he was one of her own cubs and gradually he gained all the powers of the cat family. Tamara would be David's guardian for the next few years until he was eventually found by a rescue party who brought him back to the United States.

Upon arriving there, he's appalled to discover that not only is his hometown of Central City (at one time considered one of the safest cities in America) a corrupt, crime-infested shit hole, but also that Merrywether Industries is no longer the bright beacon it once was due to poor mismanagement and is on the verge of being bought out by ACME!

After taking back control of the company, thereby making sure that his father's legacy will never wind up in the grubby little hands of Alabaster Dread, David decides to use the powers he gained in Burma to become a costumed crime-fighter by the name of CAT-MAN in the hopes of returning Central City to its former glory!

A couple issues down the road, David will encounter Katie Khan - an 11-year-old orphan from the rough side of the tracks who he will adopt and take on as his faithful ward - the Kitten!
