Bunker and Plans

The busted-up highway stretches ahead, a mangled skeleton of concrete and steel; cracked slabs jutting like broken teeth, rebar claws twisting skyward, rusted guardrails crumpled like tinfoil. Our cy-CHOs rip through it, engines screaming in unison, hover fields kicking up thick clouds of red dust and debris in our wake.

We ride through the chaos like death-defying adrenaline junkies: leaping over collapsed billboards that tilt drunkenly, weaving between jagged rebar spears that could skewer a skag, the rigs tilting at impossible angles. At one point the road simply ends; nothing but air and a thirty-foot drop; but our cy-CHO's doesn’t hesitate. We go horizontal, wheels gripping the vertical wall like magnetic death, thrusters flaring blue-white as we ride the sheer face for a heartbeat, gravity laughing at us. My stomach flips; heart slams against ribs. Pure, stupid joy surges up; raw, electric, the kind that makes you feel alive in the middle of a warzone.

cy-CHO rumbles beneath me, she’s loving this. I can feel it in the way the engine growls deeper when we hit a straightaway, the way the neon blades pulse brighter, hungry.

“I know, girl,” I mutter under my breath, patting the console.

Lorelei cuts through the glitchy comms, voice crackling but attitude shining through loud and clear.

“So that thing’s ‘speaking’ to you?”

I grin, that low, intimate connection between me and my mechanical death squad humming in my veins. I’ve always thought they spoke clear; gruff, mechanical, digital; but it was just beeps, grunts, non-verbal chatter to the others. Sure, they’re not reciting poetry, but their intent? Their language? Crystal fucking clear. Like a pack of wolves growling in perfect sync.

“You get used to it,” I reply, as we sail off a tilted highway support beam, landing hard on a crumbling rooftop with a bone-jarring thud that rattles my teeth. “Tannis called it Junk Tongue or Scrap Speak.”

Lorelei lets out a short, amused laugh, their Cyclone roaring beside me; neon piping flaring pink as they match my speed.

“Weirder shit’s happened. Heard tell of some big guy getting possessed by a psycho’s dead cat or somethin’.”

We speed ahead, the broken skyline of Promethea rising around us; rusted metal towers leaning like drunken giants, neon haze bleeding into the smog, corporate decay everywhere.

It doesn’t take long before we reach the outskirts where Lorelei’s bunker is set up: reinforced steel walls pocked with bullet holes, turrets humming on automated sweeps, resistance soldiers moving like ants under fire; rifles up, eyes hard, exhaustion etched into every face.

Our cy-CHOs slow, purring down to a quiet hum as we reach our destination. The soldiers eye me warily; Vault Hunter or not, they’ve seen enough shit to be cautious. Weapons stay low, but fingers hover near triggers.

Lorelei hops off their Cyclone, stretching their arms overhead with a groan that’s half-exhaustion, half-relief. “Home sweet shithole,” they mutter, giving me a sideways glance. “C’mon, V.H. Let’s plan how we tear those signal jammers apart.”

They lead me into the bunker; tucked inside the shell of an old Atlas Executive Wellness Center, or what’s left of it. Busted fountains sit dry and cracked, shattered glass covered with plywood, half-burnt motivational slogans hanging crooked from the walls:

“Relax. Rejuvenate. Obey your corporate overlords.”

Comforting.

Inside, the place has been stripped down; makeshift command posts, resistance fighters slumped over gear, cleaning rifles with shaking hands, patching wounds with blood-soaked bandages. Tension so thick it could choke you; sweat, gun oil, fear, and the faint metallic tang of spent ammo.

Lorelei slaps a crude map down on the table; a stitched-together mess of scavenged paper, Sharpie lines, and coffee stains; but it gets the job done. My HUD scans it instantly, overlaying a polished, digital version into my vision; clean lines, real-time updates, threat markers pulsing red.

The target? A sleek, corporate high-rise; glass and steel thrusting into the smog, six jamming towers mounted along the interiors, terraces, and rooftop. All pulsing with encrypted signals. Maliwan tech. Their jammers make it incompatible with my Action Skill; otherwise, this mission would be over before they finished their stupid “hostile detected” protocol.

“We need to get in close,” Lorelei explains, tapping the building schematic. “Shut them down manually. Your pretty little talent can handle that. I’m coming with you for backup.”

Suddenly, the door slams open; one of their soldiers bursts inside, wild-eyed, sweat-slick, panic clear.

“Wilhelm!” Lorelei exclaims.

“Boss... Maliwan’s found us. Heavy artillery inbound.”

Lorelei straightens; expression shifting to pure battlefield commander in half a heartbeat, all softness gone.

“Shit. You-” They jab a finger at me, eyes sharp. “Looks like you’re getting a close-up introduction. You ready to break some corporate skulls?”

My guns? Loaded.

My talents? Sharper than ever.

The itch for violence is back; burning under my skin like a live wire.

“Always ready.” I crack my knuckles, the sound sharp in the tense air. “Let’s ruin their day.”

The moment we burst from the bunker, the cy-CHOs leaps into secondary mode; eager and bloodthirsty; over 15 feet tall, four arms flexing as the double-edged neon swords hum to life, slicing the humid Promethea air with a low, angry whine. The blades glow brighter; Lor's pink and white, mind a gunmetal grey; ready to carve.

Lorelei’s jaw ticks up slightly, eyes sparkling with a mix of awe and amusement.

“Still not used to that.”

We find cover behind a collapsed overpass; the cy-CHO's tucking down, blades retracting just enough to stay hidden. My Respec’tor digitizes into my hands. I stare down the barrel, holographic sight displays “dumb asses” in mocking red text. I smile. They really don’t know what’s coming.

The incoming rumble of Maliwan artillery grows louder by the second; vehicles tearing across the ruined streets, turrets mounted, shock troopers in sleek armor closing fast. The ground vibrates with their approach, dust falling from overhead girders like ash.

I pop open the Companion Tablet; fingers dancing across the screen. CubeCrawler deploys with a shimmer of blue-white light, skittering into position beside us; ports spinning up, frame trembling with eagerness. WeaponsCacheBot, BeatDownBot, WallBiter; all pop into place, their forms crackling into existence as my personal death squad fills the space around us.

The air hums.

The street vibrates.

The battle’s coming.

CubeCrawler’s ports spin up, his frame trembling with eagerness.

“Bring it the fuck on,” I whisper.

Maliwan convoy rounds the corner; shiny, sleek, corporate-perfect war machines rolling in like they own the place—turrets swiveling, shock troopers leaping off in formation, rifles humming.

I may not be able to assimilate them into my growing companions, for now…

But what I can do… is show them what my trigger finger is capable of.
