Bugging out

You all have to leave quickly early in the morning as Mr. Smith is coming out to fish with important guests. Ashley was looking out for her brother and got a half hour warning. Everyone but you, her, and Jon leave immediately. You three clean the worse of the mess and spray air freshener. Mr. Smith won't care as they only use the place to park cars and get on to the boats and go fishing. Ashley leaves in her car to drive back to college. Jon says he will give you a ride back to town in his truck. As you are leaving, Jon gets a call on his cell phone from the grocery store.

The morning manager is in a panic and can't reach Mr. Smith. A checker and a stock boy called in sick and the store is getting slammed. You and Jon go to the store and fill in for the sick (drunk) duo of Lexie and Joe. As you work, you think that you don't impress Jon as a date or girlfriend. You are surprised, at the end of your shift, when he asks you to the Homecoming Dance the next weekend. You work a lot the next week as some of the other girls needed time off for Homecoming activities. You rarely talk to Jon as you are both busy.

You and Amber get ready for the dance at her house Saturday afternoon. Jon picks you both up in his dad's new SUV and then gets Tom before going to the school. Lexie and Joe show up at the dance drunk and are thrown out. They are fired the next day when they miss their 4:00 afternoon shifts. You dance a lot with Jon but don't get real close. He walks you and Tom walks Amber to Amber's door at ten to eleven. Jon tells you he had a great time but has to open his dad's store at six in the morning.

You and Amber talk about your night and the boys after they leave. Amber is totally in love with Tom. She tells you that apparently she is the focus that he needed as he is trying real hard to get good grades and quit drinking. She tells you that you and her could be out later hanging with him but he has to wash and detail several cars for his dad, starting early tomorrow. You tell her that is great and you are happy for her and Tom. You tell Amber you don't think Jon is that into you. She tells you that you are nuts, and that he is crazy about you.

At school Monday, Jon tells you that he had a great time at the dance and wants to do something just the two of you next Saturday as you are both off. Friday Jon tells you he has to cancel your date as he will be at the store most of Saturday as his mom and dad have to leave town unexpectedly because his grandparents were in a terrible auto accident and he will be filling in for his dad. He promises to make it up to you with dinner at Geraldine's next weekend. (Geraldine's is a fine, formal restaurant.)
