Buffy

Retreating to the library to hopefully find his friends and take his mind off of what he had just heard Xander found himself confronted with a terrible sight when he looked thru the window in the door.

An afraid Buffy.

Sitting alone at a table, her one leg drawn up, arms wrapped around it and resting her chin on that raised knee while looking particularly spooked.

"Oh boy." Xander groaned and pushed thru the door. He couldnt wait to hear what supernatural hijinks awaited them.

"Hey." He called out softly.

"Hey." Buffy nodded as she turned to look at him.

"Everything okay?" They asked at the same time.

They both blinked at one another and chuckled. Xander guessed he looked more then a might peeved given what Cordelia had said to him. Or at least bad enough to make Buffy worry.

"You?" He asked.

"Angelus sent me flowers last night." She grumbled.

"Ah." Xander nodded.

"You?" Buffy asked.

"Cordelia explained why she dumped me." Xander grimaced.

"Ah." Buffy nodded.

They were silent for a moment.

"What'd she say?" Buffy finally asked.

"High school love is fleeting. Being popular is more important. But she does love me tho. But being Queen C is more important. So... you aren't cool enough, therefore siyonara sucker and don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you."

"Wow!" Buffy leaned back and just stared. "I mean... just wow."

"Yeah." Xander sat on the table top in front of Buffy. "Not great, Buff."

Buffy nodded her head "wow."

Xander jerked his head towards the office where Giles was looking around for something, "Whats the G-Man up to?"

"Looking up the sick things Angelus likes to do for funsies." She frowned, "I've never been so happy to not own a pet."

"Ah." He shook his head, "Also ew."

The quiet returned as they both sat staring at one another.

"Life sucks, doesnt it?" Buffy asked.

"Yuuuup." Xander nodded his head.

"I'm not saying I want the world handed to me on a silver platter but... you know...." Buffy gestured helplessly.

"A win in the ol' personal life every once in a while would be nice." Xander filled in. "A little karmic something for the effort we put in."

"Yeah." Buffy bobbed her head. "A little cosmic comeuppance for all the work we put in."

"Face it, Buff, we are the Universe's Butt Monkeys." Xander slunped forward and shook his head.

Buffy stuck out her tongue at that idea. "Bleck." She shook her head, "I dont wanna be anyone's monkey."

Xander shrugged, "Sorry, Buff, I think that comes part and parcel with the whole being The Slayer thing."

Buffy groaned and let her head drop to rest on her knee. "I'm so tired of being the Slayer. I swear I would rather trade placed with Harmony than be The Slayer some days."

Xander looked at Buffy askance. "Seriously? Harmony? You?"

Buffy let out a whiny whimper and shrugged. "Not all the time, cause, y'know... Harmony. But, like, right now? I wouldn't mind not being the Slayer."

"Huh." Xander stared blankly ahead. His mind working. If Buffy wasnt the Slayer then who would be? And why couldn't it be him? There was the whole Slayers are only girls thing, true. But... there had to be a way around that.

Xander slowly began putting together the question he wanted to ask.
