Breakfast with Dot, but Dr. Cutler is out

Dot laughs as she butters her morning toast. "So you and Kelly are off the job, now that Dr. Cutler had her morning butthole temperature tick up when she dropped her egg?" she says.

"Yes. Maybe one more time, if she asks today? But I think this the last time for this cycle. Maybe you will be on her Ob/Gyn rotation next time if it doesn't take." You take a sip of coffee. This morning is probably a half-cup morning.

"Haha, no," Dot says. "Not after what you and Kelly went through. I'm with Jen, keep those dicks at a safe distance with proper barrier practice. I mean it wasn't terrible having to take pee cups from men, but it was still kinda awkward."

"I thought you were starting to like collecting urine samples from men, Dot."

Dot blushes. "Well yeah, I was," she says. "It was still weird. I was much happier taking pee cups from women. But that got even more awkward. After Ms. Holt had us practice taking a pee cup from her, I thought it was gonna be a free pass to touch, spread, and get a real good look at a bunch of ladies' candy stores, and goddamn if it wasn't great. Until one lady caught the look on my face while I was taking her pee cup and teased me about coming back for seconds. When Ms. Holt kinda saw my vibes, she asked if I wanted to take a break to take care of myself, and when I was 'no I'm okay', she pointed two fingers between her legs, made a little digging motion, and told me to go take care of myself. Embarrassing."

"Did it work?"

"Yup," Dot says. "The rest of the day was blood draws, and my hand was plenty steady."

"She was a good supervisor."

"Yeah," Dot says. "I think Brenda signed up Ms. Holt because she knew Lexie was a big ol' dyke and would understand what she was getting into with us. But also rock solid as a hospital technician."

"DeLoria Cutler is very much a lesbian, too. As far as understanding is concerned. And she likes being around us. But I am not sure Dr. Cutler has good personal boundaries."

"Well, you know she basically swooped into Brenda's place," Dot says. "And Brenda, well? Boundaries, what boundaries?"

You laugh. "Thank you, Dot," you tell her. "With Brenda and Betty? That was hard. Thank you for being there for me. You are a good friend."

"You too, Anna," Dot says. "I woulda been climbing the walls if you hadn't been so chill about the jill. You're a good one, girl."

Dot's wordplay makes you laugh again. You're surprised how often you laugh when you are around her. You are so different. But maybe not so far apart.

You and Dot drive in together like usual. Dr. Cutler is off today, so your part and Kelly's part in her Mommy Project is presumably complete. Nurse Bates puts you and Kelly in the guidance of Ms. Goodchild for a day of sitting in with obstetrics appointments. You have a clipboard of notes on the protocol of what issues tend to be of concern at different stages of pregnancy, and about follow-ups for common conditions -- a clipboard, since the hospital is a little short on clinical touchscreen slates, and your personal devices are forbidden from use during patient contacts.

You know that Nurse Bates is part of the trainee program as a reassignment. You enjoyed her touch and her tongue very much during the trainee welcome party in Brenda's pool house. You wonder if she might be open to connecting.

Gloria Bates smiles at you. "I'm flattered, Anna, truly," the senior nurse and supervisor responds to your proposition that you and she renew your physical connection. "We must practice better ethical boundaries within the program while at the hospital. I don't have to remind you why it's Dr. Cutler and myself in Brenda's office?" She returns your nod. "So, no. Not here, not now, not you and me."

"But not never," you say.

Nurse Bates smiles and says nothing further on that subject. You converse about the program and about hospital procedures and directions of interest to you.

"Looking at the weeks remaining in your trainee program, and hearing your interests, here are some options for you after Ob/Gyn." Nurse Bates highlights some of the hospital practice groups which could be good matches for you. She's listed Pharmacy, Imaging, Records, and Public Health. "Some people think Records are boring or tedious, but the questions you've asked and your experience so far have led me to understand that you're interested in procedure." She puts down the paper. "There's another place this shows up at our hospital. While there isn't a good way to have you do a rotation, the hospital has a procedure and practices group that reviews what happens when things go wrong and how to prevent them. You could follow along with one of the incident reviews. Some of them are actually logistics and supply failure reviews, so not precisely medical failures, but absolutely medical readiness failures." Nurse Bates smiles. "I'm glad at how interested and engaged you've been in the opportunities for learning here, Anna. I'm really happy you're part of the program."

"Thank you, Nurse Bates," you say. "I'll let you know about that. And I would like to follow an incident review." You swallow, cough, and clear your throat. "C-can I get a hug?" you ask.

"A hug is absolutely within good practice," Nurse Bates says.

She is big and tall and strong and soft and gives good hugs. You cry silently on her shoulder. When she sends you on your way, you are both smiling.

"Thank you, Anna," Nurse Bates says. "Very much."

And then you are crying again.
