Chapter 6
by Brainvamp
...
You go to one of the restaurants of the boat to stuff yourself on free bacon and eggs and get ready for another day of party
Your body cries for a few more hours of sleep but before that you would not mind filling your belly with greasy pancakes and fried eggs. You have always been a big fan of the huge breakfast they serve in hotels and you suspect that the Caron will have a large buffet for you to indulge yourself.
The breakfast room could easily fit 300 people with place to spare but only a couple of tables are occupied.
You go browse at the buffet. The girl tending it seems familiar; she is as pale as the rest of the crew, her neck displays a large hickey she has badly covered with some make up. When she sees you eyeballing her, she smiles. Something is off in her smile and the feeling that you know her is getting even worse.
“Can I help you with something?”she asks.
She reeks of sunscreen. You smile back.
“No I’m fine I think everything’s here, right?” you say pointing at the huge display of food.
“Are you sure?” she insists “coffee, tea maybe?”
“I’m…” you start.
You remember where you saw her. She was with your group when Esme showed you to your suite. You are certain she was a passenger; you had noticed her because of her bag, it was the same as yours. And you are also certain that she was not as pale as she is now. How can someone become so pale in a matter of hours, let alone under the blazing Caribbean sun?
“I’m … sure” you finally reply, ill at ease.
Avoiding eye contact with the girl, you mechanically fill a large plate as fast as you can. You can feel her look burning a hole in your back as you walk away from the buffet. The table occupied by the large group is pretty noisy so you sit as far away from them as possible. The couple must have had the same idea.
“Good morning,” they throw at you cheerfully.
“Good morning” you answer.
The food in front of you is soon inside you. You closely observe the girl from a distance and when she moves away from the buffet you race to get a second serving. Coming back you notice the couple leaving.
“Goodbye” you say.
They don’t answer and leave the room through a door behind the buffet. The girl follows them and does not come back. You go back to the most important meal of the day.
Two servings later, you feel much better and your worries about the girl are long forgotten. You feel heavy but after the long dancing hours, you really needed this. The clock on the wall shows now ten thirty and the breakfast room is still almost empty. You wonder where everyone is.
By the door a crew-member is looking for passengers willing to go on a boat ride that should leave in ten minutes. Four people from the noisy group have signed up. Not feeling sleepy anymore you approach the man.
“Where is this trip going?” you asks.
“There’s an island not so far from here with large caves. It’s absolutely magnificent. From there we’ll take you to a beach where you’ll be able to swim.”
It does sound nice.
“How many people can you still take?”
“We’re almost empty, everyone is still sleeping…”
“Can I call my friends, they might be interested”
“Of course, use the phone there” he says showing you a phone hanging from the wall.
You try to reach the room three times but no one answers.
