Chapter: The Law of the House
It happened on a quiet Thursday night.
Dad had been on his knees for almost twenty minutes. Mom sat on the edge of the bed in her open robe, one hand resting in his hair, guiding him with small, absent movements while she scrolled through her phone with the other. She came with a soft, controlled sigh, thighs tightening around his head, then kept him there a little longer than necessary before she let him go.
He stayed on the floor.
She looked down at him, flushed and relaxed, and finally asked the question she had been holding for weeks.
“Are you ever going to tell me why you started this?”
He was silent for a long time. His jaw still ached. His cock was hard against his thigh and she had not given him permission to touch it. The external drive was in the drawer of the nightstand, less than two feet away. He had carried the secret long enough that it had begun to feel like a third person living in the house.
He reached over, opened the drawer, and set the drive on the bed beside her.
“I’ve known for a while,” he said.
Her expression did not change at first. She simply picked up the drive, turned it over in her fingers, and then looked back at him.
“Show me.”
He did.
They sat on the edge of the bed together while the videos played on the laptop screen. He did not skip anything. He watched her face instead of the footage. She watched herself. Her cheeks colored, but she did not look away. When the longest clip ended—the one where she checked the clock and told the men her husband might be home soon—she reached out and paused it herself.
The room was very quiet.
“How long have you had these?” she asked.
“Since the day I found them. A little over two months.”
“And you never said anything.”
“No.”
“You just started kneeling.”
“Yes.”
Mom closed the laptop and set it aside. She studied him for a long moment, still naked under the open robe, yellow gloves discarded on the nightstand. Then she did something he had not expected. She smiled—small, almost gentle, and completely without shame.
“I suppose it’s time we talked about the rules of this city,” she said.
He frowned. “What rules?”
She stood, walked to the window, and looked out at the quiet suburban street for a few seconds before turning back to him.
“You know we don’t live in the same kind of place we grew up in. Not really. New Atlanta has its own laws. One of them has been in effect longer than either of us has been alive. They call it the Dibs Law.”
Dad waited.
“It says that white women of legal age inside the city limits are available first to Black men. Not as a suggestion. As law. Non-Black men can still be with non-white women freely, but when it comes to us…” She gestured at herself. “We are expected to make ourselves available. Permission is preferred in polite company, but it isn’t required. A Black man can knock on any door where a white woman lives and the law is on his side.”
She walked back to the bed and stood in front of him.
“I found out years ago. Most white wives here find out eventually. Some fight it. Some ignore it until it finds them. Some of us… adjust.” She tilted her head. “I adjusted. I found men who understood the arrangement. I made a private place where I could give them what the law says they can take. And I kept it away from you because I didn’t know how to explain it without breaking something.”
Dad’s mouth was dry. “You’re saying this is legal.”
“I’m saying it’s the rule of the city we live in. The same way traffic laws are rules. The same way property lines are rules. You can dislike it. You can hate it. But it is the rule.” She reached down and brushed her fingers through his hair the same way she had when he was on his knees. “And under that rule, white husbands who stay with their wives become something specific. The polite term is ‘patient.’ The common term is ‘cuckold.’”
The word landed between them with no softness at all.
“I didn’t force this on you,” she continued. “You found the videos on your own. You chose to keep the secret. You chose to kneel. Part of me wondered if you already understood and just didn’t have the language for it. Part of me hoped you would never find out. But you did. And instead of leaving or exploding, you started giving me your mouth whenever I wanted it and waiting for permission to come.”
She cupped his chin and made him look up at her.
“So now you know. The men in those videos weren’t strangers I was cheating with in the ordinary way. They were exercising a right this city gave them. I was exercising the same right by answering when they called. And you…” Her thumb stroked his lower lip. “You are already living like the law expects you to live. You just didn’t have the name for it yet.”
Dad’s voice came out rough. “And if I say I don’t accept it?”
“Then you have the same choices any man in your position has. You can leave. You can try to fight a law that has been in place for generations. Or you can stay, keep kneeling when I want you to, and understand that when I come home late with flour I didn’t need, I was not breaking our marriage. I was following the rules of the place we live.”
She let go of his chin and sat down beside him on the bed, suddenly looking more like the woman who packed his lunches than the woman in the videos.
“I’m still your wife,” she said quietly. “I still love you. That part didn’t change. But I am also a white woman in New Atlanta. And that comes with a different set of obligations than the ones we grew up believing in.”
She glanced at the closed laptop.
“You already changed for me without being asked. The only question left is whether you want to keep going with your eyes open… or whether this is the night everything ends.”
She waited.
The house was silent except for the low hum of the refrigerator downstairs and the soft sound of her breathing beside him.
Current Options
1. Dad accepts the law and the new shape of their marriage. He stays submissive and the arrangement becomes open and acknowledged.
2. Dad rejects it and demands she stop completely, forcing a crisis.
3. Dad asks for rules of his own—conditions under which he can live with it (he wants to watch, he wants to be told in advance, he wants to remain the only one who finishes inside her, etc.).
4. Dad needs time. He leaves the house for a few days to decide, and Mom does not stop him.
5. Dad asks her to show him the laboratory and explain everything in detail—every man, every rule she follows, every time she has used the Dibs Law since she learned of it.
