Chapter 15 by Cantalope Cantalope

Which character defines the story?

Bowen to the rescue!

Demonstrating her above-average intellect (for a fairy), Aster carefully ignored Bowen as he slowly crept through the mess of books and machinery that littered the shack. Despite her act, the creatures (demonette's they called themselves) seemed to pick up on her spark of hope. Exchanging glances through narrowed eyes they whispered amongst themselves, Aster was only able to catch part of it.

"-found a way out?"

"Don't see how. The glass is-"

"-should we ask master? What if-"

Lily (Or Lilith, as she called herself) stalked over, "What're you bunch whispering over?"

Two of the demonette's looked startled, afraid even, but the third had the oddest look of adoration on her face. Aster shook her head. These things might have been fairies once but now their thoughts were unknowable to her.

"We were just wondering if we should start the conversion Mistress-I mean..." she gulped as the other two whipped their heads to look at her and Lilith glared ****. "the...um...Master would...uh...Mistress?" The other two demonettes bolted in opposite directions as Lilith made a grab for both, only successfully catching one. The other buzzed up to the human, pointing and spewing words in a language Aster didn't understand.

The human turned, surprisingly fast, and caught sight of Lilith as she was turning to flee. He bellowed incomprehensible words that shook the glass around Aster and every demonette in the room fell upon Lilith, piling on top of her and pinning her to the table. The human stepped forward and slammed a fist into the table, clearly berating Lilith but Aster was in no shape to try and understand why. She could feel the reverberations of his voice in her chest and her headache returned as the glass shook.

She didn't even notice Bowen outside her prison till he was wrestling with the nozzle above her. Yes! She would be free! She bounced up and down anxiously as he fought to overcome the friction, she had never felt so dependent on someone. He looked so strong, biceps bulging... FOCUS. She hated being so helpless! If only... wait. The demonette's were distracted.

She held out her hand and called upon the magic of the glade: POP. The glass broke free and Bowen deftly caught it before it could fall and shatter, gently propping it against the wall. Jumping out, she grabbed Bowen and drew him into a kiss before getting a hold of herself and pushing the dazed treeman away.

She looked at her sisters, chittering in their cells, all calling to her for help.

"Just use your magic!" she whispered, calling up a little green ball of energy to demonstrate. She didn't wait for their reaction, snatching Bowen and making a beeline for the nearest window. She heard the sound of cracking glass behind her. Yup. That was what she'd been afraid of. Wonder how long it'll take the demonette's to notice the glass prisons exploding?

She loved them, she really did, but most of her sisters were total dipsticks. She'd be back for them she told herself as they flew out the window and back to the glade as fast as her wings could carry them.

What's next in our heroine's journey?
