"Oh?" he feigns surprise "you didn't try to escape? Why?"

After none of you speak, he asks:

"Don't you want to leave Emily?"

"No" you say.

"Hmmm, it seems that you had a change of heart and you decided to accept my hospitality. Good. But really you didn't want to escape, even a little?"

"I checked if there are any guards" you admit.

"And?"

"And there were none."

"Yet, you didn't escape. Why?"

"Because...because...I thought it is a trap. And I was afraid of punishment if I get caught again."

"Good" he says "that means two things. One - your punishment was effective. And second - you can draw conclusions from past mistakes. That's good. I think you are ready to begin learning the basics of your new lives."
