Blueberry Pancakes

I walked into the kitchen to find a scene that looked like paradise, in a domestic, college kitchen kind of way. Sunshine streamed through the blinds, suffusing the room with a warm, pleasant aura, while the smell of the delicious pancakes put a delirious smile on my face.

“You’re just in time, take a seat and try these.”

Frank smiled, with a simple purity shining through his face that was a world away from what we’d done together not more than 20 minutes ago.

“I really think I’ve done it. These might be my best ones yet!”

He presented the pancakes, little flecks of blue giving away the hidden little blasts of flavor waiting inside. I grabbed the maple syrup off the counter and put a splash on top, before cutting in and taking a bite.

“Uuhhmmmm…!”

My eyes went wide. He hadn’t been kidding, these pancakes really were incredible! I swished them around in my mouth, enjoying the lightness of the pancake itself, but what really stole the show was how the electric fresh zing from the blue berries worked hand in hand with the sweet rush of the maple syrup. The pancake itself just made the perfect medium to temper both flavors, and give that perfect consistency that made eating them a sensory pleasure for both taste and touch.

In between jealous bites I managed to get out;

“Oh my God, Frank... you really weren’t kidding. You’ve done something special here.”

From the corner of my eye, I saw how the praise made him almost puff out his chest more, and a satisfaction pass over his face. It wasn’t gloating, or arrogance, rather it was the wholesome reaction of a guy who loved simple pleasures, and being able to share them with others.

I’d always known Frank could cook, as I’d had his meals a few times as myself when he’d been generous and shared, but this really took things to a whole new level.

“You’re going to make a great house-husband someday.”

I teased, a gentle grin taking my lips as I drank some orange juice. I’d expected an unabashed, joking reaction, but what I got was him actually almost blushing, and looking to the side for a moment. My heart kind of sped up at that, and I started blushing a little too.

Was I… finding a guy cute? I’d be a little concerned normally, but right now I could feel Alicia’s feelings towards him leaking through into my heart too; a pure, genuine love, strong, subtle rushes of dopamine just from being around him. Taking back control of some of the momentum, he fired back;

We both laughed at that, before getting lost finishing the meal. “Let’s go camping this weekend. We can bring friends, or go alone, whichever you prefer. I know this great spot up in the mountains right on a little lake up there. The views are meant to be great, there’s a forest to explore, and there’s even some ruins we could check out too. Plus, with autumn coming in I just think it would be great to get one last trip in before the weather takes a turn.”

It did sound like a lot of fun, and it also presented a lot of ideas. I knew that Alicia and Frank had always loved the outdoors, and they would rave on about how great camping trips were and how they almost needed to get one in every month or two when the weather permitted.

But then again, would it really be right of me to steal way one of these precious trips from Alicia? I’d already stolen a party from her, could I steal a camping trip?
