Blind Chance

The journey back home on Monday afternoon turned into a genuine nightmare for Owen. A sudden autumn downpour hit the city, forcing him to cram into the first bus that arrived at the bus stop. The vehicle was suffocatingly hot and packed to maximum capacity with exhausted students and workers. Owen found himself pinned tightly right in the narrow aisle, desperately pressing his school backpack against his chest. Inside, hidden securely in the deepest pocket, lay a travel mug filled with the carrot smoothie that he had so tensely "charged" in the farthest stall of the college restroom. The overwhelming mix of adrenaline and thick, stale air made his heart pound heavily against his ribs, and cold sweat began to roll down his spine.

At the next stop, another wave of wet passengers surged inside, and a drenched female student managed to squeeze onto the seat right next to Owen's spot. Sighing deeply from exhaustion, she placed her heavy bag on her lap and pulled out a travel mug. Owen froze, his breath catching in his throat when he realized it looked identical to the one in his bag, having the exact same color and size. He tried to look away, staring blankly ahead to avoid any eye contact. However, as the bus rounded a sharp curve, a car cut it off, and the driver slammed on the brakes with full force.

The passengers lurched forward violently, tumbling over one another. In the chaotic shuffle, Owen’s backpack and the stranger's bag slid together, and their identical mugs rattled against the metal frame. Without looking, the tired girl reached down and confidently wrapped her fingers around one of the mugs.

Owen froze as they both scrambled to gather their fallen belongings in the tight space. The girl deftly scooped up her things and slipped the mug into her bag with absolute certainty. Owen hesitated for a split second, looking at the identical container left on the floor. A nagging doubt immediately crept into his mind, but she moved so fast, and the crowded aisle was so chaotic, that he couldn't verify the labels. A swap was already impossible. Stuttering nervously, Owen mumbled a messy apology, grabbed the remaining mug, and physically snatched his backpack back.

He spent the rest of the ride in deep thought, staring at the blurred window as the initial adrenaline began to fade. Owen quietly analyzed the situation, calmly yet seriously realizing how fragile and vulnerable their secret had become the moment it left the walls of their apartment. Carrying the growth formula around in a crowded city was an immense risk. As soon as the bus doors hissed open at his stop, Owen stepped out into the pouring rain. He walked quickly down the sidewalk, the heavy drops splashing against his glasses. Turning the corner of his street, he finally saw his building. Gasping for breath under the dark canopy of the entrance door, Owen put his hand into his backpack. His fingers brushed against the smooth metal of the mug, and he desperately began running his thumb over the lid, trying to find the tiny scratch that would tell him the truth...
