Will Adam's seed be successful?
Birth and Pregnancy
Two days later, Daniela arrives to fetch us. Our mother’s time has come. When we arrive together, the labor is already well underway. The midwife is there, and everyone has gathered in the living room. For the first time, Adam and I are allowed into the bedroom where the birth is taking place; soon it will be our turn, so we are expected to have some experience with it.
Ten minutes later, another girl is born. While the midwife continues to tend to my mother, I take care of washing the baby. Then I hand her to my father, who steps outside with her and holds her up high.
"The Lord has gifted us another girl. May she be a good arrow in the quiver. Her name shall be Paula."
Then he comes back inside, and she is placed on my mother's bare chest. Once Mother is somewhat recovered, she is able to take a seat in the armchair while a small celebration is held. The children sing "Happy Birthday, Paula."
Back at our house, Adam asks me when I am actually expecting my period. After a quick calculation, I say, "The day after tomorrow."
That day passes, and the next one too. I’m not used to this, as my period is usually very regular. Therefore, I get the two pregnancy tests that are always kept on hand in every Quiver house. I pee into a bowl and take it to Adam in the kitchen.
He dips both tests in—and after a short wait, two lines appear on each. He takes me lovingly in his arms and kisses me.
"The first arrow has been carved."
A few days later, we drive into town, where the gynecologist also confirms the pregnancy.
What does Cynthia mess up?
