Megan was studying at the intersection of Biology and Physics, specifically researching fringe theories about the interaction between thought and reality. Most would call her research pseudoscience at best and outright fraud at worst, but her advisors, especially Dr. Evelyn Scott, saw her potential and kept her research well-funded.

She was on the cusp of making an interface between thoughts and reality, a device that could take thoughts and immediate make them take effect on the world. She intended for it to be used for feats of engineering and medicine, but stray thoughts during her test run would spell a different future.

“Alright, Dear,” the older Dr. Scott started while Megan put the finishing touches on the device. “Are you sure you want to try the Interface Device yourself? We could contact one of the animal testing labs—”

Megan cut her off. “No, I don’t want to do animal testing. Besides, this is tuned for human brains only right now.” She lifted the device, a deceptively-small smooth machine the size of a flash drive and worn on a slim metal chain like a necklace. Ease of use was one of her main goals with its design; once it was around the user’s neck, their thoughts would immediately alter reality to fit them, and likewise those changes in reality would reflect into the user’s brain to hopefully avoid paradoxical thoughts.

She lifted the necklace while Dr. Scott watched anxiously and put it around her neck, where it immediately hummed to life and activated on her first thought.
