Chapter 4 by amalgam amalgam

Please select a major for Alexis.

Biochemistry

"Uh, biochemistry!" I blurt out almost randomly. I actually have very little interest in biochem, but I was a little embarassed to have transferred here without a declared major. Yah, I'm probably being silly, but it's too late to take it back now, at least in front of Rose. She shrinks her wide-reaching smile into a pucker and goes, "Oooooooooooh."

"Wow, that kinda thing is like..." she swiftly passes a hand over herself, "'whoosh,' right over my head."

"Oh it's not so bad," I assure her, laughing and acting like I know something.

"Hehe. If you say so."

Well, as I can't think of anything else, I might just stay with biochemistry. The classes I took at my old campus were at least related, so that should make things easier for me.

What's really cool about this university is the extent of interdepartmental study. For example, there are several biochemistry labs listed on the department website working alongside groups in neuroscience, engineering, psychology, genetics, and biology for some truly novel research.

Seeing as how modern psychiatry and medicine view psychological disorders like depression as chemical imbalances (unless Tom Cruise has any say in things), it's no wonder that many of the listed joint research topics are about modifying or mitigating behavior. Some others are about synaptic connections and looking for ways to artifially enhance cognition. A select few focus on emotions and how they operate in animals and in humans.

Of course, that isn't all. I don't even have to go to the next page to know the breadth of all these scholarly endeavors.

Should I try out one of these labs?
