Big city here we come.

In the end you just had to get away a bit farther, Chicago wasn’t that far from home, but at least it wasn’t a creepy religious school. Your mom complained, and threatened to take the car she bought you, your sporty little fiat 500 L, and yes it’s a fiat, a girl car, but it’s the L, the bigger one, and it’s so roomy inside, it’s great. Eventually you promised to come home once a month and she gave in. She even helped you pack all your things. The three hour drive wasn’t bad and you were excited the entire trip, it passed in no time.

Now here you are. The office of your advisor and ready to start. You calm yourself and pull the door open. Sitting at his desk, currently on the phone, is a slightly balding man, probably early sixties, in an expensive looking, if a bit old, brown suit. His brow is furrowed and he motions you to sit as he talks on the phone with someone clearly angry. “I know, I’m sorry, yes the computer problems have been ongoing, the entire state it would appear, I know, yes, I’m sorry, yes, your son is one of many that will be starting a week late. Yes, the teachers have been apprised of the situation and they are going to help all students that are arriving today. Yes sir. Yes Mr McIntyre, I will. I will see to it personally. Yes sir. Well I assure you… Sir… sir…”. He hangs up and looks at you. He glances at the large clock on the wall and grabs a yellow folder. “Alexis Pike I assume?” His voice still sounds annoyed.

A lump rises in your throat, you clear it, “Um, it’s Alex, um, actually.” Ugh, I sounded like a timid cat.

He shrugs, “Alex, got it. I’ll note that in your file.” While writing he says, “Prefers to be called Alex.”

“Um, oh, well, no, um I mean, my name is actually Alex not Alexis.”

“That’s odd.” He says looking at the paper. “It says Alexis right here, I I even have a picture of your drivers license.” He shrugs, “I’m terribly sorry, our computers were hacked a while ago and it has caused me a ton of chaos. Im not exactly sure of anything right now. You see the semester actually started last week, and many of our students were told to arrive today on a Friday, to get settled in and that their classes would start on Monday next week. A full two weeks behind the other students. This has caused tons of issues with housing and many students, such as yourself, are going to have to work to get caught up. In your case, with your simply amazing gpa, and excellent test results, I’m confident this will be but a momentary setback.”

“So classes are already two weeks…”. Your voice trails off when he glares at you. “Sorry, go on.”

“No, don’t apologize, it is our fault. The other issue is in a couple of cases, yours being one, your class selections were lost, as is your Major. I tried to guess based on your tests but it is probably best if you just tell me.”
