Chapter 21
by TheMouse
How do you sleep?
Better
It was late into the evening. You were training with some of your guards that your mother had issued to you. The village was always too noisy, and the other kids always made you angry. 'Demon Demon, ' they would chant. Even though your mother was considered the village leader, no one was you as anything but an outsider.
"Again!" You yelled, standing firm in the field, your body drenched with sweat. You looked at the two men in front of you, holding wooden poles. Your body was still stinging from their previous impacts.
"That's enough, lad." one of the men says,
"No, I can do this!" you yelled, raising your own wooden pole. Your hands were shaking. You had been at this for fifteen hours. You needed to get this. You needed to prove to her that you were strong.
"Enough!" A voice yelled from behind you before a hand reached down and yanked the pole from your weak grasp. Looking up, you're greeted by your mother scowling at you. The two men move away without another word, leaving you alone with your angry mother.
"You need to stop this." your mother said, sounding angry and concerned.
"Why, because I'm too weak?" you spit.
"Rider, you are six years old. You should be playing with the other children in the village. Not torturing your body!" Your mother said sternly, throwing aside the pole and crouching down to look at you. "You are confused and angry because you do not talk to anyone about your feelings."
You push your mouthers hands off your shoulders, "Of course I'm angry", you move over to pick up the pole twirling it in your hands. "this helps me forget about everything." Your mother watched as you flicked the pole, trying to get into a rhythm, you only managed to move for a few moments before your tired legs gave out, and you fell forward onto the floor.
Your mother was quick to come to your side. Your vision was blurry from tears forming in your eyes. "Why do I exist?" you said as your mother wrapped her arms around you to comfort you. "I don't know, baby, but I promise you will know one day."
You cried into your mother's arms as she held you. You didn't know what else to do.
You didn't wake up with a blade in your hand. You felt some tears in your eyes, but you slept well. The girls were still sleeping soundly on your body. Jinx was slightly snoring on your left, her arm draped over your chest, and her other arm was somewhat lower on your body by your thigh. Raven's head was still on your shoulder, as was a small patch of drool from her opened mouth, and as if not to be outdone, her other hand was on your stomach. Smiling to yourself, you reached around with your arms and pulled the girls closer to you before closing your eyes again.
