The 3:55 PM tone rang out, startling Beth and Billy.
"Holy shit...well, that detention went faster than most..." Billy looked at Beth with concern. "You're not going to report me for talking during detention, are you?" His mouth quirked in a concealed smile.
"Alright, Mr. Preston. Don't press your luck." Beth stood up and walked somewhat awkwardly to the desk. Is it hot in here? The AC must be on the fritz... she had to lean on the desk for a second before grabbing the clipboard.
"Mr. Preston. Your detention is served. Get to your bus."
"This one is. I have detention every day next week."
"Well...I'm sorry."
"I'm getting off light."
Beth reached up to grab his backpack strap as he walked past. "Hey." she swallowed as he met her gaze. "I hope I don't have to tell you to leave Jimmy alone."
"You don't, Miss Wilson. You know me. I'm a lover not a fighter." The mask was back, but it was different now: it was as if he wore it loosely, at least for her.
"Okay, loverboy. Get out of here."

Beth sat at the desk for a few minutes, thinking about the conversation she had had with Billy. She was in that state of deep thought when Principal Schiff came by for the clipboard.
"Thank you, Miss Wilson." His tone was the same as always. "Did Mr. Preston give any trouble?" Now there was a change in his tone: Hopeful. You cocksucker. You're hoping I say 'yes' so that you can expel him.
"Not at all. In fact, he was a model student." Her eyes dared him to challenge her assessment.
"Hmmm... Very well then. Enjoy your weekend."
