Batgirl receives an odd letter

After a short time thinking, the criminal elite decided to play a trick on her. Defeating Batgirl before she became a real problem would be easy… as easy as leaving her a letter on the rooftop she most frequented, marked with a bat symbol.

The letter was written pretending to be Batman, saying he was impressed with her work so far and laying out the terms for officially letting her into his circle. All she had to do was pass one test. One simple itsy burst test.

“I don’t know Babs, it seems a bit off,” one of Babs’ close friends was hesitant when they heard the news.

“Don’t you see what a great opportunity this is?!!” Batgirl said. “Besides, the cowl’s padded, I’ll barely feel a thing!” she added with a quick knock to her forehead.

“I still don’t know…”

“You worry too much! It’ll be fine!”

With that, an excited Batgirl left through her window into the nighttime rooftops of Gotham, eager to pass Batman’s test and join his team. It was a test of toughness. He had said in the letter that she had already proven her ingenuity, detective work, and skill against common criminals - what he wanted to see was her ability to take a punch. If she could go one night getting her chin smacked by everyone she saw, without getting knocked out, then she would be in.

Honestly, the city’s criminal elite were just shocked their practical joke actually worked. Their plan had been to manipulate the innately cruel nature of Gothamites to render the Batgirl useless as a threat before she could fully become one - the very same Gothamites she fought to protect would be her undoing. She would actually let them knock her out. It was the perfect irony. And it would work so well that this little test would mark Batgirl’s last night out as a superhero. After her eyes rolled up in her head and her body slumped to the floor, the great Batgirl would be no more.
