Chapter 16 by jealco jealco

Which way should Venus head?

Back to Namina

As much as she'd love to get to the other town, Woodsedge, she had a duty to notify the Guild about the necromancer. His forces were far stronger than normal. A pack of ghouls such as his could ravage smaller towns and villages with impunity. The Guild needed notice in case Moseph was unable to finish the job.

Venus groaned, then turned back up the road towards Namina. She really wasn't looking forward to the walk back. She'd love nothing more than to find a good pair of boots. She set the fastest pace she could, intending to make the trip as short as possible.

For about twenty minutes, she walked, lost in her thoughts, trying to ignore the pain in her soles. That reverie was broken by a couple of shouts, a scream of pain, and a pair of men sprinting for their lives across the road.

Venus jolted out of her reverie, and promptly dove for a fallen tree. She slammed down behind it, branches digging into her breasts and stomach, and froze. Whatever was chasing these men, she couldn't reveal herself too soon, especially with her lack of equipment.

What she saw next horrified her. One of the men tripped, tumbling to the ground in the middle of the road. Various pieces of gear clattered as they fell from his pack across the road. Then, a massive treelike creature thumped onto the road. It was easily 5 or 6 meters tall, very thick, and covered in small, writhing branches and leaves. One massive hand reached out, slamming down on the man. The results were predictably messy. It roared, thundering off after the other man. Though it's stride seemed lumbering, the sheer length of it's legs meant it was moving faster than most humans could run.

"Treant..." The thought rolling through Venus' head was anything but pleasant. Without any of her kit, there was very little chance that she could stop something that massive. Her sword would do nothing more than annoy it. Fighting it was likely a suicidal proposition. Running, however, consigned the man to his fate. Could she do that?

Can she? Can she abandon this man to his fate?
