Chapter 17
by jealco
Can she? Can she abandon this man to his fate?
She has to warn the town
As she watched the man flee, the Treant in hot pursuit, she knew there was nothing she could do for him. Her soul cried in agony at her decision, but she knew deep down she was no good to anyone dead.
And then there was the matter of the town, Woodsedge, if she recalled right. She had a duty to warn them, or a great many more lives might be lost. With that thought as motivation, she turned and sprinted up the road for all she was worth. Her bare soles pounded the rough road, stabs of pain shooting up from her feet as she ran, but she ignored it, pressing on.
As she ran, a tear ran down her face. She was still in shock at the decision she had made, and the ramifications of making it. She had to wonder if she could live with herself, having consigned that man to such a fate. Another tear joined the first, and Venus found herself dangerously close to breaking down and sobbing.
She reached deep down within a mental reserve she barely knew she had, and put a lid on the emotion. Right now, countless other people were counting on her, and they couldn't afford her stopping.
A few minutes later, she burst from the edge of the forest, immediately taking to the grassy edge of the road, and kept running down it, before her mind caught up with what her eyes were seeing. Woodsedge was a ruin, it's buildings shattered husks surrounded by smashed piles of stone that had once been the wall. Something had leveled Woodsedge, and Venus had a pretty good idea of what it was. Venus staggered to a stop, her mouth agape at the view in front of her. Shock and horror vied for her attention, but she again reached for that mental reserve, and pushed them to the side.
Looking at the town, Venus knew, deep inside, that there weren't going to be any survivors. The place was far too ruined for that. However, she now had a different choice to make. Namina definitely needed to know about this threat, as they'd have to put a hunting party together to rid the forest of this Treant, and any others that may have gone rogue. However, she also had the problem of the Treant. It's last known location was on the road back to Namina. Maybe she should make for a different Hunter's Lodge. They'd offer some assistance, at the least.
Venus glanced down, suddenly world-weary, and was reminded of yet another pressing problem. Her eyes took in her heaving breasts, hanging freely through gaping rends in her tattered shirt, and traveled down to her dirty, bare feet. She could really use some equipment, at the very least a shirt and some footwear, but the only place in miles that might have been able to help her was a smoldering ruin. There was a slim chance that some useful items had survived the carnage, but that would mean entering Woodsedge, and Venus didn't know if she could stomach that.
What now? Search Woodsedge for some gear? Attempt to get back to Namina? Or maybe attempt to head to a different lodge?
