Chapter 61 by Faustus Faustus

Which Room First?

Aunt Maude's

James and Jenny surely had their own secrets, but if anyone was hiding something good, it would be Aunt Maude. Emma hesitated for a moment, afraid of what her stern aunt would say if she found Emma in her room. She took a deep breath and started towards the doorway at the end of the hallway.

Convincing herself that she would be able to hear the stairs and escape Maude's wrath, Emma peeked in the room. The drapes were pulled shut so the room was dimly lit. Emma's eyes were first drawn to the small amount of light at the window, then she let her gaze take in the rest of the room.

Old pictures, which Emma assumed must have been her grandfather and great-grandfather, lined the walls. The wallpaper was old fashioned, and out of style. Even in the poor lighting, Emma could tell it was old and faded. The furniture fit the same description, but unlike the wallpaper, the furniture seemed like stylish antiques.

Emma turned her head just a bit and admired her Aunt's bed. It was a beautiful four poster, minus the canopy, whose woodwork matched the same style of the dresser. The bed clothes were more like the wallpaper though. Faded and showing their age.

Finally, she looked to the closet. She noticed the large, man-shaped shadow, and jumped. Emma hit her shoulder on the door-jamb and she cried out.

"Hello, Emma." Her Uncle said in greeting.

Her heart raced from the fright, and now her shoulder hurt. "Oh, hi Uncle," Emma quietly said, trying to come up with an excuse for looking in her uncle's room. Then she became more curious about what Ed was doing in there in the first place. "What are you doing?"

"Well I was going to change shirts before I go work on the truck, but then I saw you and figured that I'd wait and see what you wanted." Edward replied.

Emma felt her face starting to blush. She was having a hard time coming up with an excuse for what she was doing. In her head she had prepared for someone coming up the staircase. She hadn't come up with a plan in the event of someone being in their room.

Ed cleared his throat, letting Emma know that he was still waiting for her to say what she wanted.

What Does She Tell Him?
