Attending to business

You flip through the paperwork until you find the number of the doctors office that had been assigned to you. Sam Hass, MD. You dial the number, and wait for a response. Very quickly someone answers, a bit surprising for the weekend.

“Hello, this is the office of Dr. Hass. How can I help you?”

“Oh! I expected to get a voicemail. Hello, I’m Andy Stevens, and I’m calling because I just received a Hybrid from CompanionCorp, and they referred me to this number for medical care.”

There’s a pause, and you hear some typing. “Ahh, here we go. Yes, I see the referral. So you’re looking to bring this Hybrid in for an initial consultation, correct?”

“That’s right.”

More typing. “Well, you’re in luck, it looks like Dr. Hass has an opening in her schedule in the morning. Can you come in at 9?”

Her? From the name you had assumed that this was a male doctor, though it really makes no difference in the end. “Yes, I can bring her in tomorrow morning, should be no problem.”

Yet more typing. “Wonderful, I’ll schedule you in, then. Dr. Hass will see you then. Do you have any questions for us?”

“Just one, actually. I understand that you’re not actually affiliated with CompanionCorp?”

“That’s correct, we’re simply contracted to take care of local Hybrids. Is that an issue?”

“Not at all, just curious. Thank you, I’ll be there tomorrow.”

“Have a good day, Mr. Stevens.”

You hang up. That’s taken care of, then. With any luck, this Dr. Hass will be sympathetic enough to check out Emi as well. Hopefully there’s nothing serious.

You file away that worry for another day, and put your phone away. You take the packet of paperwork, and drop it on the kitchen counter as you start looking at what you could make to feed everyone. You turn to call out to the girls and ask what they want to eat, but you’re startled to see Emi walking up to you. She has that sly look in her eyes again, and a crooked smile on her face.

“Emi? What’s up? I was just about to make us all some food.”

Emi shakes her head. “Not yet. First, I want to show you something about Lili.”

She takes your hand, and you smile. “I’m glad you’re getting along so well already.”

Emi nods. “I like her. She’s cheerful and fun. And I think she’ll be a good fit for us. But for now…”

Emi gestures to the bedroom.
