Where did he build his machine?
At work
The company Michael worked for was small and quietly successful. It had carved out a niche for itself offering specialised technical services to other companies who in turn supported larger corporations who in their turn collaborated with still larger conglomerates and so on up the ladder to the dizzying heights of the corporate elite.
Michael enjoyed his own small role in the great engine of capitalism and was well compensated for his efforts.
His colleagues were a nice enough bunch in their own dull witted way, and for the most part he got on well with them, even if he did consider most of them to be beneath him.
More importantly, his role as office IT support was mostly routine and undemanding, allowing him ample time to work on his own projects. Like, for example, installing a reality warping machine in the company server room.
Now, with the power of the machine humming in the back of his mind, his humdrum work days are behind him. He can't wait to start making things more interesting around here...
