"Now, who are you again, and what do you want with me?" Machiko asked gently.

"I am Nanoko, mistress," said the ninja, bowing profoundly. "I have loved you from afar, and have come this eve to pledge my undying passion for you."

Machiko blushed and waved her fan. This was most...unexpected. Her father's servants were never supposed to act thus. If the woman were caught, it would be the end for her.

"Here, let me prove it to you," said Nanoko, her eyes full of passion. She reached within her skintight silk bodysuit, between her breasts, and drew out a small piece of paper, handing it to Machiko. "It is my pledge to you, to serve you always in love."

Machiko opened the slim piece of rice paper. In most excellent calligraphy, in the perfect haiku of a well-versed student, it told of Nanoko's selfless love for the princess, and how she would serve her always, no matter what.

"Beautiful," said Machiko, placing the paper down atop one of her books of haiku.
