Chapter 18 by alyena alyena

You must have some questions at this point?

Ask Indra to continue her story

"This is all... a lot to take in at once. I have other questions for you, but I think I interrupted your story."

The young witch nods. "Of course. I do digress sometimes, you'll have to forgive me. I don't often get to talk with other people. Where was I, again?"

You quickly finish swallowing a spoonful of soup. "Apparently my horse told you what happened at the Abbey."

"Ah yes..." Indra leans back in her chair. As she begins to talk again, her hands idly begin to run through her long, raven locks, twisting her hair into braids and unwinding them in turn, endlessly fussing. It isn't distracting as such, but you do wonder if its nervous energy, or a some sort of magely exercise to maintain her finger-dexterity.

"Keep in mind that the bits of story I'd gathered so far were natural beings, the spirits and your beast. Their perspectives aren't the same as yours or mine would be. I gathered that it was a significant invasion, but not how large, exactly. I knew that there were daemons involved, but not what specific types. With that information alone, I could guess what happened next, but your Aegis confirmed my suspicions."

"I won't bring up again what you and your sisters suffered, but suffice it to say that I know enough. So when I found you in the woods, caught in a fever-dream, I couldn't leave you there. I keep wards in place, so the daemons won't easily find us if they're looking. I had to bring you back here, nowhere else would be as safe. I had to strip you down to get the filth off you and that's when I saw the daemon mark."

Indra must have seen you stiffen when she mentioned the vile rune on your belly. She paused, searching for the right words to ease what would come next. "You need to know what it is, what it means. I have to explain it to you so you can understand what I did next... Are you ready?"

No, you're not. You're nearly trembling, but you were trained to face your fear head-on, to not avoid danger but to open your eyes, acknowledge the threat, and defeat it. "Indra, it has already happened. If you mean to help me, then tell me what this affliction is."

She cast her eyes down, struggling as much as you with what would come next... "The mark of the daemon appears when a master has impregnated his mate. Your flesh and your soul are bound to this creature in eternal servitude. **** holds no release, as you will be reclaimed in the abyssal realms. Even when you have borne your foul offspring, his claim will simply prepare your body to be bred once more."

"It is for this reason that I... entered your thoughts. I could not be certain that you weren't already your master's pawn. I have seen first-hand what degradations you suffered. Sabine... there are no words."

So there it is. You cannot deny your defilement, your betrayal... You turn to look out the window. The rain is still beating down upon the glass. The drops splash and burst into tiny droplets which collect and form rivulets. What an odd thing to notice...

"Sabine, are you okay?"

Outside the glass, you can see each bead of water as it stands and then slides down the window. As you turn to regard Indra, the room spins around you, and it's difficult to focus on anything. The witch rushes to your side as you begin to tumble from the chair.

"I'm... pregn... with a..." Indra tries to wrap her arms around you but you push her away as you feel bile **** its way up your esophagus. You retch what soup you'd managed to put down. The meager contents of your stomach evacuated, you continue to dry-heave for several minutes.

When your body is under control again, you're on your knees by the table, your head hanging in your hands, the blanket wrapped around your body only covers you loosely. Indra kneels beside you, arms surrounding you in a comforting embrace, one hand rubbing your back. The warmth of her body feels nice, and her scent is calming. "What will I do? I can't have this creature's child? I'm a sister... palad... goddess, I don't know what I am anymore!"

How does Indra respond?
