Chapter 12 by crunchyspag crunchyspag

What's next?

Arriving in Jamestown

After a long time at sea, trying to get as much sleep as possible in your crowded hammock, the ship arrives in Jamestown, one of the earliest and most important sites in the Southern half of the colonies. You and Buchi weave through the men working on the boat, carrying goods and leading lines of chained slaves. You made your goodbyes to the captain and the crew members you were more friendly with, but now you want to get back on dry land as soon as possible. The captain gave you the name of a business acquaintance of his, a Jack Fowler, who might be able to set you up with a short-term job carrying cargo on the docks. You'd like to eventually become more independent, even start a farm of your own, but everything in it's time. Hard to start up a farm without any capital, or land for that matter.

After a bit of asking around you find the office of Fowler. Going inside the small building, you see a dark-haired, bespectacled man of early middle-age smartly dressed behind a counter. He looks up as you come through. "Yeeeees?" he asks, drawing out his question impolitely. "I'm here to see you about a job on the docks." He looks you up and down quickly, moving nothing except his eyes. "You look to fit the job well enough. Very well, you're hired. We don't have any ships in today, check back in a few days" he says. Without bothering to dismiss you, he turns his attention back to something on his desk. "But sir, I have no money. I just arrived and haven't even a penny to pay for lodgings. Could I maybe get an advance?" He smiles sarcastically. "An advance, eh? I've known you for two minutes and you're already asking for money. Tut tut" he says, shaking his head. "If you need money so badly, why not get rid of a little excess property" he says, looking at Buchi. Your blood runs cold at the thought, and you run outside dragging Buchi, Fowler snickering as you go.

"Well, it might be a rough few days" you say to Buchi. You highly doubt she understand perfectly, but she seems to have some awareness of what is going on.

Do you have to sleep in the street?
