Applying Oneself

When Mary returned home she found Thomas working on the application on his PC.

“How’s it going there champ?” she asked.

“Almost done mom, they ask a lot of really personal questions,” Thomas replied.

“Such as?” Mary asked.

“’When was the last time I had sex?’ for example,” Thomas said.

“Do I get to ask what you replied?” Mary asked.

“The 5th of never of course,” Thomas said, “Apparently that’s a popular answer, they show you a graph when you answer it.”

Mary looked over his shoulder at the screen, “So I see.”

“I’m just finishing up and I’m ready to submit it. They asked for your name and email address, and if you were interested in the ‘Relief Hostess Program’, I gave them the first two and said I didn’t know to the third,” Thomas said.

“Sounds good, hit submit,” Mary said.

Thomas did, and moments later Mary’s phone pinged. She looked at the text message. “Apparently I have mail, let me take care of my end of this,” Mary said.

Mary sat down at her laptop, she didn’t feel like trying to fill out the whole application on her phone, pulled up the email and clicked on the link.

The first questions were rather standard, name, age, address, marital status, financial information, relation to applicant, and gender. After she answered the gender question, it asked if she was interested in the ‘Relief Hostess Program’, Mary answered ‘yes’ and it took her to another application.

This one got a LOT more personal.

‘When was the last time you had sex?’ Mary briefly considered answering “the 5th of never” because it certainly seemed like that, but figured the person reading the form may not have a sense of humor. Then she answered that anyway, it was about the same timeline as the last time her ex and she had sex.

The next question was a multiple choice:

1) Tuition assistance

2) Helping young men concentrate better on studies

Reading this made Mary feel better about how she answered the previous question. Mary picked up her phone and contacted Jordan “Hi, Thomas and I both completed our applications for WMIT” she said when Jordan picked up the call.

“Splendid, as soon as they send me a referral I’ll let you know. Would you like me to take you to the interview and introduce you?” she asked.

She disconnected the call and went to Thomas’s room.

“Hey champ, all done and submitted. Rob’s mom is going to call me when she hears something,” Mary said.
