In the 2023 film 'Barbie,' what is the name of the real-world corporation that manufactures Barbie dolls? Is it A: Mattel, B: Hasbro, or C: Toys R Us?
Answer 'A: Mattel' confidently
"A. Mattel," you say, your voice carrying clearly across the studio despite the hammering in your chest.
Derek's expression flickers—just for a moment—with something that might be disappointment before the professional veneer snaps back into place. He consults his card with exaggerated care, drawing out the moment as the studio audience leans forward in their seats.
"Mattel," he repeats slowly, then pivots to face the cameras. "And that is... correct!"
The audience erupts into applause, though you detect an undertone of anticlimax in their response. They came for blood, not success. A chime sounds and numbers flash on the screen behind Derek: $10,000.
"Ten thousand dollars in the bank!" Derek announces, gesturing broadly at the display. "Our Jessica starts strong. Very impressive. Very impressive indeed." His tone suggests it's anything but impressive—more like a temporary inconvenience.
Crystal claps her hands together from her position near the transformation booth, the latex of her suit squeaking with the movement. "Yay Jessica!" she calls out, her enthusiasm genuine even if her delivery sounds like a children's television presenter on sedatives.
Derek doesn't acknowledge her. Instead, he's already pulling the next card from his stack, and you realize with a sinking feeling that there's no pause, no moment to catch your breath or celebrate. The format is relentless.
"Question two," Derek says, his smile sharpening. "This one's worth twenty thousand dollars, doubling your current total to thirty thousand if you get it right. But get it wrong..." He lets the threat dangle. "Well, Crystal hasn't had anything to do yet, and she does get so bored."
The blonde woman shifts on her heels, looking uncomfortable. You catch her eye briefly and see something flicker there—sympathy? Warning? It's gone before you can identify it.
"Question two," Derek repeats, savoring the moment. "In what year was the first modern brassiere patented? Was it A: 1914, B: 1889, or C: 1926?"
He looks up at you, and the studio lights seem to intensify, making you acutely aware of your own heartbeat, the weight of the shackles, the watching eyes of the audience.
In what year was the first modern brassiere patented? Was it A: 1914, B: 1889, or C: 1926?
