Chapter 11 by Twistinger
What ARE you thinking?
Another proposal?
"Well, why not?" you respond to your partner's expected protest. "There's power in numbers, right? If she joins our group and levels with us, this could work out for everyone."
"That don't mean ya have to be buddies with every scrub ya come across! Look, ya heard her say it herself!" The thug jabs a finger into his other palm. "She's gonna get herself lynched if she shows her face around. And us too if we're so much as within twenty feet of her!"
"That's the point! If all of us get stronger, we wouldn't need to worry about that!"
"Ya ever hear of something called 'not gatherin' attention' to yerself? She's a walking trouble magnet! And that's comin' from me!"
"Hey, I'm still here, you know! With a pair of functioning elfin ears!" snaps the thrall. "If you two want to go on with your little dick-admiring contest you can do it outside! ...Now what's this about leveling?"
You spend a few minutes, briefly going over the details with the thrall, who beholds your information silently but with a deep, thoughtful frown on her face, which she maintains for a moment or two after you finish.
"Well? What do you think?"
"Two things. First off," she says as she folds her arms, "What makes you think this is going to apply to me? I already told you I don't know who I'm supposed to be. Maybe I'm not an enemy character. Maybe I'm not even meant to be regularly interacted with. What makes you think I'll be capable of leveling up like you?"
"You can control leeches, right? And build traps? Just like those you did earlier," you point out. "It sounds to me like you've at least got the capability. I don't see why you can't pick up more."
"Fair point. Second, what makes you think I'm going to join you weirdos?"
"That's - "
"The way I see it, you two chumps barged in here uninvited, too big for your britches, and made a mess on my territory - "
"Gee, a mess! In a swamp! The tragedy," mutters the bandit.
"And now you're telling me you want me to leave? With you? On a path to nowhere?" She leans in towards you with a particularly withering glare. "Look, I don't know who you think you are, but I've seen enough patronizing assholes to last an elfin lifetime. Why exactly should I trust you, huh? Why would I trust a complete stranger who tells me to put my life on the line when I don't even know if I can respawn?!"
You try to answer, but find yourself at a loss for words. The thrall looks a combination of highly offended and ready to burst into tears, and you start wondering that you might not have thought this through adequately.
"...I'm sorry," you finally say. "I didn't consider how you might feel about all this. But please believe me - I had no intention to put you in danger. ...I just thought we could help each other be somebody more."
"Psssh. Doesn't everyone?" sniffs the thrall. "At least you have a life to respawn back into. Sometimes I don't even know why I bother dragging things out for myself. Nobody would miss me if I was gone."
"Look. I know we didn't get off on the right footing," you offer. "I'm sorry if I made you feel greatly uncomfortable. But I don't think you're as incapable as everyone else thinks you are. I used to think like you only hours ago, and now I believe things can change. ...So, how about it? If we put our heads together we should be able to come up with something."
"Fine," she sighs. "I don't think you're going to stop badgering me if I refused, are you?"
You nod towards her in understanding and acknowledgement, and work your stats-retrieving magic.

"Does it always feels so... exposed when he does that?" questions the thrall. You're mildly amused to see her cheeks darken a little as you pore over her lines of stats. "Ya have no idea," sneers the hoodlum.
"Interesting. It looks like your elfin and troll lineage have given you an affinity with beasts, along with some of the relevant skills. That explains how you were able to make those leech-infested traps," you muse. "Although my guess is you won't be summoning chimeras or phoenixes any time soon."
"Thanks, genius," she wryly responds. "You want to tell me something I don't know, or are you going to admit defeat and call it a day?"
"Munchkin, I hate to break it to ya, but she might have a point. I don't see how a bunch of flabby leeches are going to be threatening to anybody."
"Said the thug who was screaming blue **** about a bunch of flabby leeches just half an hour ago."
"Pffff!" At this the thrall puts her hand over her lips, but you've already heard her attempt at hiding a chuckle. The thug gives you a dirty scowl, tightening his fingers around his dagger but no more.
"So I'm assuming ya got a plan then, scrub?"
What is your plan now?
Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
