Chapter 37 by Zingiber Zingiber

Do you enjoy learning from the incident review? What happens with Nurse Bates?

Anna is drafted as time keeper for the incident review

The incident review is a half-day series of meetings around what happened when the outreach bus was out of action for a week. The hospital brought in a facilitator to lead the meetings. She is good at making sure things stick to the protocol. During the first break, Nurse Bates introduces you, and she invites you to take on the role of stack keeper during the question and discussion period.

Stack is a list of whose turn it is to talk next. Once you've given your comment or question, everyone else goes with their turn until they have spoken, before you can speak again. If you're stack keeper, you make a list of who wants to talk in what order, cross people off as they speak, and add people when they signal they have a comment or question.

It helps things go faster.

You do well enough in keeping track that you get to be stack keeper for the rest of the review. It may be the most public job you've had so far during your training period.

You hear from Charles, one of the bus drivers, an older Black man. Then there's Poppy, one of the outreach nurses who's usually on the bus. She's younger, with red curly hair. She speaks with confidence. And Lydia, the health education and outreach coordinator. Lydia was the busiest, because all of the rescheduling went through her, including Olivia and Margarita having to be moved around because they were going to be on the bus, and instead they ended up helping with the health education classes.

And you learn some other names and how the medical outreach bus system works, and what happens when it can't run. There were a couple of people who showed up at Emergency who could otherwise have been treated or referred during the mobile clinic visit that didn't happen because the bus was unavailable. It was a surprisingly large set of consequences just from having the bus unavailable for a week. Nobody died, but one of the Emergency patients was a blood pressure case that was caught just in time, and more expensively.

Nurse Bates has to leave before the final section, so she tells you goodbye in the hallway as the others are gathering. "You're doing a great job, Anna," she says.

"The rules are simple, and the facilitator is good," you say, acknowledging the senior nurse's praise. "It has been interesting to follow along." You frown. "But why was the bus out of action?"

Nurse Bates looks up and down the hallway. She bends close and says quietly, "I have no direct knowledge. I think Charles and Poppy were having sex at the end of the shift, and something wasn't put away properly afterward. Lydia can't afford to lose them or get in a scandal."

"Hmm," you say. "So this is partly to make the problem go away for Lydia?"

Gloria Bates raises her eyebrows, then her shoulders. "Goodbye, Anna, I'll see you tomorrow."

"Good night, Nurse Bates," you tell her.

After the end of the incident review, both Lydia and the facilitator praise your work in keeping the meeting organized. You can't read the expressions in their faces and body language very well, but they are smiling a lot at you.

You have 2 XP, +1 Hard, -1 Hot, -1 Cool, +2 Control), and know the Character Moves Ass-Licking and Masturbate.

What's your next Move? At the end of the review, you can STALK Lydia the health education coordinator, or the review facilitator (describe her on a success).

Or you can check with Kelly on how she is doing after being accidentally impregnated, or Dr. Deloria Cutler on her on-purpose pregnancy. Or you can catch up with Dot, or back to Medical Records with Margarita. Or even Olivia or Jennifer, back in the trainees' changing room and showers.

What's your next Move, Anna?
