Chapter 43

How does the rest of the night play out?
An unexpected phone call
Spencer gave Evelyn a smooch on the cheek as her phone rang. She rushed to the pocket of her pants to answer her call. After a deep breath, she answers the unknown caller.
"Hello, this is Evelyn Malone speaking?"
"Miss Malone. My name is Frank Sharpton, and I'm a lawyer representing Miss Appleton. As you may know, her husband recently passed, and that he was involved with the accident that wrote off your personal vehicle."
"Okay."
"Well, Gary's will has put his car collection under Miss Appleton's ownership, and she has offered to let you select a vehicle of your choosing."
Spencer watched her mouth become agape, as she attempted to stammer out a sentence. "Oh...oh my God really?"
"Yes. Mrs. Appleton and I would like to know when you'd be able to come over?"
"Uhh... how about Sunday?"
"What time would suit you?"
"Hmmm... one o'clock would be best for me."
"I'll book it in."
"Thank you so much."
"No problem. I'll extend your thanks to Miss Appleton."
"I appreciate it."
"Well, if you have any questions, please feel free to call me. Otherwise, I'll see you then."
"Yeah. See you then."
Evelyn put the phone down with an ear-to-ear smile. "Oh my God."
"What?" Spencer asked.
She then pulled Spencer in for a vice-like hug. "I'm getting a new car."
As a tear flowed down Evelyn's cheek, Spencer said "What happened?"
"The wife of the guy who wrecked my car is offering me a new car."
"That's great news Evie."
Evelyn took a deep breath in before looking to Spencer. "Could you come along? You're good with that lawyer talk stuff?"
"What, because I was a lobbyist?"
"Well you're better with bullshit than I am."
The two roared with laughter before Spencer said "So, one o'clock Sunday?"
"You're a good listener Spence."
"I try."
"You know, I think I might take a shower."
"Sure. I better get dressed. Still gotta pick up Amy."
"Shit."
"What?"
"My car's still in the way."
"I could drive it."
"Sorry Spence, but I think the Sheriff would freak out if I let a civilian drive it." Evelyn stood up. "I'll let you get dressed."
"Sure."
As Spencer walked off, Evelyn thought about her change in luck. In a phone call, her troubles had just disappeared, and so did her doubts and her fears.
